NOTES: William Haden David:
After his wife Mary died, William Moved with their family in 1859, hoping to escape the loss of his slaves in the impending Civil War, and serching foe a wife and mother for his youngest children. During those difficult years, his oldest daughter, Mary Elizabeth, handled the education and upbringing of her young siblings. In a letter written by William Haden to his brother in Georgia, he hints at a pact between his daughter, Mary, and himself when he writes "I now have permission to marry." Not long after moving to Texas he married a widow, Sarah E. Carter Chambers. This letter is in the possession of Dessie White Hall of Dew, Texas.
Both William and Sarah David are buried in Driver Cemetery, Freestone County, Texas. On their joint tombstone is chiseled:     
"Weep not my friends
Dry up your tears
For I shall arise
when Christ apprars.
There is a debt
to nature due.
I've paid that debt
and so must you."

Mary Elizabeth David was born in Georgia, December 28, 1841. The county of birth is unknown at this time, but possibly Madison, Jackson, or Stewart Counties. Her parents were William Haden David and Mary Power(s). She lived as a child in Stewart County, Georgia, where her father was apparently a planter/farmer, registering 14 slaves. Her mother died about 1853, cause of death is unknown. In 1859, concerned with the unrest over the slave issue, her father moved the family to Freestone County, Texas. They lived in the Moody-Bradley House in Fairfield while they looked for land on which to settle.
