GRAY: GRAY FAMILY GENEALOGY This is written to report on the status of the search, for the genealogy of JAMES EDMUND GRAY. James Edmund Gray is the father of James William Gray (JimBert). James William Gray was my grandfather. Working from information provided by the children of JimBert Gray, as to what they had heard about their Grandfather. I found that he was buried in Hardin / (old Whitaker ) cemetery, located near Pi ne Bluff, AR. in the Hardin Community. The cemetery is to the south on Hardin-Reed Road about two miles off highway 270 west of Pine Bluff. The graves of James Edmund and Eva Ella Gray are just inside the cemetery gate, on the left as you enter. The graves are located next to the fence by the road. Everett Howard Benson is buried next t o Eva Ella, he is one of her children by a previous marriage. She was first married to Samuel Elias Benson. It is said he deserted her and the children, but I have no further information on the story . I do have the genealogy of the family included in the family data. The Guyer’s buried nearby are related by marriage to the Gray’s. I was told by Charles Gray that his grandfather James Edmund and Eva Ella lived at the end of Hardin- Reed Road where it intersects with Princeton Pike. They lived just across the intersection on th e south side of Princeton Pike. The old house is still standing . I was able to find obituaries for both James and Eva Gray at the Jefferson County Library in the old copies of the Pine Bluff Commercial. I searched the internet for weeks without any luck, so finally I posted a message to one of the genealogy sites. I asked for anyone researching this Gray family or the Warrington family to please cont act me.( Eva Ella’s Maiden name was Warrington). After a couple of months I got an email from a lady who was researching the Warrington’s. She gave me information on Eva Ella’s first marriage. Also she told me about a relative who had an old family bible that she thought might help with the Gray’s. The lady with the bible was a Guyer before she married. We were invited to come over and look at the bible they have. The Guyer and Gray family notes were both in the bible. We were able to write down some of the information we found there. We found the Children of Isaac L. Gray. One of them is James Edmund Gray. There is also two discharges for Isaac L. Gray from two separate Ohio volunteer units which were from the civil war. The discharges show that both units were formed or mustered in Hardin County, Ohi o from 1861 to 1865. These regiments were part of the Union Army. They show his description as 5’5" tall with light complexion and ruddy skin, with auburn hair. ( I now believe that one discharge i s for Isaac L Gray And probably the other is for his father). There would have to be two separate individuals. The hand written entries in the bible are very hard to read. They appear to have been written with lead pencil and have faded in parts. Also the script is in the old style of writing and more time t o study it was needed. The following shows the notes we were able to make from the bible: Isaac L. Gray Born Nov. 15, 1828 Married Sept. 29,1853 Lydia (N?) Gray Born Aug. 28, 1832 Hardin Died July 27, 1867 Alice (J. or I . ?) Gray Born Jan. 13, 1856 (Looks like maybe, Lancaster, IA ) Albert (T. or F.) Gray Born July 17, 1859 Pleasant TS, Ohio James E. Gray Born July 7, 1861 Blanchard TS, Hardin County. Died April 11, 1932 J.H. Gray Born April 14, 1866 Hardin County, Ohio Isaac L. Gray Died July 10, 1910: Meadows, Maryland. NOTE: added by James Parker 11/23/07..( I found the Death Certificate @ Prince George Co, MD. it shows date as 10 June,1910). Mrs. E.E. Gray Born Sept. 30, 1865 Drew County, Arkansas. Died Dec 30, 1935 Joe Guyer Born Oct. 18, 1885 Neo Desha, Kansas Married Jan. 10,1911 Died Dec. 28,1974 Mertie Inez Gray, Guyer Born May 15,1894 Pine Bluff, Arkansas Died Aug. 20, 1968 The bible also has the original marriage certificate for James Edmund Gray and Mrs. E.E. Benson in it. Marriage record for Desha County, Arkansas April 27, 1893 at Walnut Lake, Desha County, Arkansas J. E. Gray aged 32 and Mrs. E. E. Benson aged 27 of Tillar, Drew County, Arkansas on the 20th Day of April 1893. By: W.R. Harrison who received his credentials from Montgomery County, Arkansas as a licensed minister. . After receiving this information I was able to go to the internet and search for Isaac L. Gray in Ohio. Finding information on him in Hardin County, Ohio I was able to get Copies of some records fro m their Genealogical Society. I now have records that show he was born in Franklin county, Ohio in 1828. He moved to Hardin county in 1832 from Franklin county. (this is from the Hardin County Pionee rs Book.) We have a copy of the request for a marriage license to Lydia Henry, in Hardin County. I have found The family of Lydia Henry in the 1850 Census on page 135 for Dudley township, Hardin County, Ohio. Her parents are John and Hannah Henry. John from New Jersey and Hannah from New York. Th ey are farmers with real estate valued at 3600 dollars. Lydia was 16 years of age on this census. We have a copy of recorded deaths for Hardin county in 1867 showing that Lydia N. Gray died of a miscarriage , she was 33 years of age. Residing in Hardin county, Marion township, Ohio at the tim e of her death. The record shows she was born in Dudley township, which is also in Hardin County.( As I referred to in the 1850 census above ) Occupation listed as Farmers wife. ( This death would hav e been about 15 months after her son J.H. Gray is shown to have been born in the bible we referred to ). We have a marriage license request for Isaac L. Gray to Eliza A. Austin on June 9, 1870 in Hardin county, Ohio. I do not have a record of her death yet. I am assuming at this time he is the same Isaac L. Gray. I believe I have found the family that Isaac L. Gray descends from in Cessna township, Hardin county. NOTE: ISAAC GRAY’S father is called ISAAC GRAY or GREY as we continue. The LAND OFFICE RECORDS at Cincinnati, Ohio shows land sale for cash to Isaac Gray in 1837. I found on the 1840 census for Hardin county, Cessna township, Isaac Gray with 10 children. (1840 census listed names for head of households only.) I found (Isaac Grey) on the 1850 census for Hardin county, in Cessna township who has a son named Isaac who is the right age to be our Isaac Gray. The census states the father was born in Maryland and the mother in Delaware. (the1880 Census shows his mother was born in Pennsylvania and father in Maryland). I believe this is the right family Based on information from Hardin county, Ohio. This 1850 census lists almost all of the Grays’ found in Hardin county in the following years census records which are open for searching.( census records are not released for 70 years to protect privacy . ) I was able to find information listed on the Ohio genealogy web site. HISTORY OF HARDIN COUNTY: CESSNA TOWNSHIP.It states that Isaac Gray was, perhaps, the second settler in the area. He came from Franklin County, Ohio, and settled in the west part of the township, On the borders of the marsh, in 1832, where he remained through his life. It is stated that he was an industrious, honest and worthy citizen, and a member of the Disciple Church. He was twice married. By his first wife, Catharine, he lead the following children Thomas, Jesse, Johnson, James, Mary Ann, Gilbert, Adeline, Isaac, William and Catharine. His second wife was a Miss Hamilton. By whom he lead one child, Wesley. . NOTE: The records of marriage for Hardin county, shows Miss Hamilton was Mary Hamilton who married Isaac Gray on March 18, 1851. I located Isaac L. Gray in the 1880 census for Hardin County, Ohio. It shows Isaac was living alone as a widower. Apparently Eliza A. Austin Gray, if she was his second wife, did not live 10 years after their marriage. They were married in 1870 and in 1880 he was alone again listed as a widower. Catharine Grey Martin his sister listed his widow as Lydia Grey on his death certificate in 1910. He was on the 1890 Census for Surviving Veterans of the civil war , Hardin county, Ohio. It says on the census notes that he had been a cripple for twenty years due to having frozen feet in the war. He is also listed on the Pioneers Association List of Surviving Members for Hardin county, Ohio dated June 6, 1891. He signed with his signature on the document. It also shows he came to Hardin county from Franklin county, Ohio in 1832. He was born in mid Nov. 1828 in Franklin county. The family bible showed he died in the state of Maryland in 1910. I found his death certificate to confirm that this was accurate. He would have been age 52 and was still in Hardin County, Washington township, in 1880 Census. He lived to the age 82, dying 10 June,1910 .The information in the family bible had shown the date as 10 July, 1910. The census records show that Isaac’s Father was born in Maryland and his mother in Pennsylvania. After several years of trying I have been able to make contact with other descendants of the Grey line. The brother of Isaac Grey was Thomas also of Hardin County, Ohio. He has descendants researching this family. Prior to 1850 only heads of households were named on census records. Therefore There are no names in the families to trace each household as you can in later census records. In most cases books are written about certain notable persons and siblings are just briefly mentioned if at all. This is all we know at the present time. I will state that none of this is written in stone. This is intended to give an update on what I have found in researching the Gray family. There were several Isaac Gray’s in Ohio during this time period. There were three Isaac L. Gray’s who served in the Union Army from Ohio during the civil war. I requested military records on two of them . I now have the military records for Isaac L. Gray. By: James Parker 1840 CENSUS HARDIN COUNTY,OHIO Hardin County history page states that Isaac Grey moved to the county about 1832. The family listed here fall into the right age groups and location to be the family of Isaac L. Grays’ parents, Isaac and Catharine Grey. 1850 CENSUS HARDIN COUNTY , OHIO This is Isaac Gray and 1st Wife Catharine, listed are the children. Second child listed would be ISAAC L. GRAY. A copy of the record was sent to me from Hardin Co Ohio. Showing the marriage of Mary Hamilton to Isaac Gray, the father of Isaac L. Gray. According to the Hardin Co. History Pages she was the mother of Wesley Gray . I wrote the notation " not recorded" by minister. Marriage of Lydia Henry and Isaac L. Grey; Isaac L. Gray signed this statement for the probate judge of Hardin county on Sept. 28, 1853. Probate judge James Bain authorized the marriage on this License. ( notice the judge spelled Grey and Isaac signed Gray, apparently the judge marked over the a with an e and father down the document he began using Gray, instead of Grey. The family bible in the Taylors possession says they were married on the next day Sept. 29, 1853. 1860 CENSUS HARDIN COUNTY, OHIO Lists: Isaac, Lydia, Alice, and Albert F. Gray 1870 Census I have not found Isaac L. Gray. But I do know that Isaac L. Gray Married Eliza. A. Austin on June 9, 1870 at Hardin county, by justice of the piece Allen F. Mc -----? The license was issued on June 8 by probate judge B. Elgin the day before the marriage. Marriage Record Isaac L. Gray and Miss Eliza. A. Austin. Married by Justice of the peace. Note that Isaac L. Gray was listed as a widower again on the 1880 census, and was living alone. Also Isaac L. Grey's sister listed his widow as Lydia Grey on his death certificate 1890 the census records were burned. No searches are available. I found Isaac L. Gray on the census records for Hardin county until at least 1891. (Pioneer Papers). 1900 Census I found Isaac L. Gray living in Prince George, Maryland. He was living in the same household with his sister Catherine Gray Martin. 1910 I found the death certificate for Isaac L. Grey, in Prince George, Maryland. It is dated 10 June 1910 as date of death. He was born in Ohio. It was Catharine Grey Martin who gave the information for the certificate. She stated that she was his sister. He died in Meadows, Maryland, Their father was Isaac Grey born in Maryland. Their mother was Catharine Calvert born in Pennsylvania. He was widowed and his wife's name was Lydia Grey This is the last official document I have seen showing reference to him. Place of burial has not been established at this time. 11/ 23/ 2007 RECORD OF DEATH FOR LYDIA N. GRAY July 29, 1867 Lydia Grays’ entry begins "farmers wife". Information on this list matches the family bible listing Lydia’s death. This was the first wife of Isaac L. Gray, Mother of James E. Gray and His siblings. NOTE: Pioneer Association of Hardin County, Ohio: Page 80 Note entry above: NAME Date of birth Nativity Date of Migration to Hardin Last Residence Isaac L. Gray Nov.15, 1828 Franklin Co. Ohio 1832 Franklin Co. Ohio Pioneer Association SURVIVING MEMBERS , Page 198 June 6, 1891 : Isaac L. Gray is # 82 on the sheet. I believe this is his signature as compared to marriage license ect. This shows us he was still in Hardin county in 1891 or at least he attended this meeting in Hardin County. MARRIAGE LIST FOR HARDIN COUNTY, OHIO Military Record of Isaac L.
