William Newton Pierce was killed by two desperado's who broke up a dance being held at the home of Wallace Hudson on the night of May 2,1935. His half brother Alva Appling was killed the same night at the same place. NOTE: Printed as it appeared in the Cleveland county newspaper in 1935 . Strangers Kill Two, Wound Two Others. Missouri Brothers, Identified As Grapevine Slayers, Killed By Posse Monday. Sought since early Thursday Morning and positively identified As the men who killed two and Wounded two at a dance at Fikestown, near Grapevine, early That morning. Clarence and Freddie Busch, youthful Missouri Bandit brothers, were killed late Monday in the woods near El paso, White county, by members of a Posse of citizens and officers. The bandits, hard pressed for Several days, late Monday afternoon Opened fire on two members of the Posse, who returned the fire with Fatal results for the young brothers Who had evaded officers and a posse Since the Wednesday night shooting Near Grapevine. The dead men are Alva Appling, 45 And Newton Pierce, 60 and the wounded Are Wallace Hudson, 50 proprietor of the dance hall, and Homer Wright, 25. When Hudson announced that the Dance for the night was ended and There would be another on next Wednesday, two young men, who had Driven up to the dance in a car and Who had attracted no particular? Attention, ordered Hudson to instruct The orchestra to continue playing. Hudson is said to have refused and Before attendants realized what was Happening, the youth produced an Automatic and a sawed off shot Gun and opened fire. Appling and Hudson fell to the floor, the former dieing and the dance hall operator Seriously wounded. The murderers without haste got Into their car and drove away. A short distance from the dance hall The desperados met another car and opened fire, wounding Wright while His companion in the car escaped injury. A short while after the shooting the Killers returned to the dance hall. Not thinking that they would return, Pierce and another man approached The car, believing that someone had driven up to give assistance. Instantly The desperados opened fire, killing Pierce. The two youths are said to have been seen in the vicinity of Grapevine several Days before the tragedy. They are also Reported to have bought gas at Willie Flynn’s filling station near the "Y" the Afternoon before the shooting. Hudson who was carried to a Pine Bluff hospital and who is reported to Be recovering from an abdominal wound, is the father of Cecil Hudson Of this place. Appling and Pierce were Members of well known families of The Grapevine section. |
