My research is quite varied, taking me from Ireland to Scotland to Iceland to the Ukraine and Quebec. My paternal grandparents came from Ireland. My grandfather, Anthony Murphy, was from County Wexford. His parents were John MURPHY and Bridget SINNOTT. My grandmother, Lucy Judge, was from County Offaly. Her parents were Peter JUDGE and Mary KENNY. Lucy and Anthony came to Canada in 1926.
My maternal grandmother, Kathleen Bradie, came from the Alva, Stirling area of Scotland. Her parents were Archibald BRADIE and Catherine JOHNSTONE. Archibald Bradie was killed in WW1 and my grandmother came to Canada in 1926, with her mother and older brother, Peter. Archibald Bradie's name was originally BRYDIE and his parents were Peter BRYDIE and Mary BLYTH. Catherine Johnstone's parents were Catherine MAKIN and Robert JOHNSTONE. The MAKINS are spread all over the world - from Canada to the UK to South Africa to Australia.
My maternal grandfather, Clarence Erickson, was born in Manitoba, Canada. His grandparents, though, were from Iceland and came to Canada in the 1880s. Icelandic names can be hard to research as the last names are different - the father's first name is taken and 'son' or 'dottir' is added to it to make a new surname. The names that I have started looking at are EIRIKSON, JONSSON and MAGNUSSON (DOTTIR).
I have also been doing research into my husband's family this has proven to be very interesting. My husband's grandfather was French Canadian and was born in Quebec. Some of the names I am researching are: PARADIS, JARRET dit BEAUREGARD, COTE, GUYON, ROUX dit SANSHAGRIN, PELLETIER, GAGNON and VAILLANCOURT. Of course, there are many other names. As well, I am researching the names SHARKEY and O'DONNELL from County Donegal, Ireland and STEFANKIV and KUSHNIR from the Ukraine.
I am interested in hearing from anyone who may researching any of these names. I am willing to share what information that I have.
