Notes for PETER W. HARPER: Peter W. Harper mustered into Co. A, 10th WV Vol Infantry with his brother, Henry, on 17 Jan 1862 at Camp Pickens in WV (believed to have been in Braxton or Upshur Co). He was 19 years old at the time of his enlistment. He was wounded 19 Oct 1864 at battle of Cedar Creek, Va. His arm was amputated and he died of sepsis 17 Dec 1864 at the US Hospital, Cumberland Co., MD. Since he had no spouse William and Eliza applied for his pension. Military records show he left no personal effects. He was described in these records as 5'5 1/2" with dark complexion, black eyes, and auburn hair. Buried in Antietam National Cemetery (MD) in grave #144, lot E, sect. 14 (source: U.S. Quartermaster's Roll of Honor, vol XV, p. 87). |
