      117. Col. Hezekiah South4 Alexander (James3, Joseph2, James1) was born 13 January 1727 in Cecil County, Maryland, and died 10 January 1801 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He married Mary Sample 1749, daughter of William Sample and Esther. She was born Abt. 1735, and died 17 May 1806.

Notes for Col. Hezekiah South Alexander:
Came to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1754 where he owned land as late as 1773. He settled in the Sugar Creek section of the county. He was one the men who signed the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence on 20 May 1775. He was a member of the Committee of Safety, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was a Magistrate in the Court of Salisbury, North Carolina.

      119. John McKnitt4 Alexander (James3, Joseph2, James1) was born 06 June 1733 in Cecil County, Maryland, and died 10 July 1817 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He married Jean Bain.

Notes for John McKnitt Alexander:
John McKnitt Alexander along with his brother Hezekiah and other relatives moved to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina about 1754. John established his home 10 miles north of Charlotte, in the Hopewell section of the county. He was a member of the Provincial Assembly in 1772, a member of the Committee of Safety in 1775, Secretary of the Convention which met on 19 and 20 May 1775 and one of the signatories to the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence produced at that Convention. In 1777 he served as the first State Senator from Mecklenburg County.

He was also a Justice of the Peace, a member of the first organized Court of Mecklenburg County, a trustee of Queen's Museum, and Registrar of Deeds from 1792 until 1808.

He served as Treasurer of the Synod of North Carolina and gave the original tract of land upon which Hopewell Presbyterian Church was built. He is buried in the graveyard of Hopewell Presbyterian Church in which he was an Elder from othe time of its organization about 1762 until his death in 1817.

  Notes for M.D. Joseph McKnitt Alexander:
John McKnitt ALEXANDER of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina had a son named
Joseph. He went to Princeton to become a minister, but became a doctor
instead. Where he practiced I do not know. There is another Joseph ALEXANDER
who was the son of Theophilus. He did become a minister. He preached at the
Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church in Mecklenburg County, N.C. Both Josephs were
first cousins.
