My name is Martyn Parsons and I have been researching both my own family history and that of my late wife's for the last few years.

I live at Tipton in the heart of the Black Country, in England's West Midlands. My Great Grandfather, George Tonks Parsons and his wife Mary Bolstridge came to Wolverhampton from Ratcliffe Culey, Leicestershire (near the border with Warwickshire) at the turn of the century. They established a small confectionary business trading at Wolverhampton market and by the 1930’s had expanded to five retail outlets in the area. The Second World War and rationing meant the collapse of the business.

Their ancestors had lived in the small village of Ratcliffe Culey since the 1760's. George Tonks Parsons was born to Jane Parsons and George Tonks almost four years before they were married. It is suspected that he may have been in the Army in India during that four years I am presently trying to confirm this.

My Grandfather George James Parsons married his cousin, Margaret Parsons, daughter of Joseph Parsons and Maria Huddlestone of Loughborough. His Grandmother Jane Parsons was the elder sister of Joseph. This Parsons family were from Upton, (just 2 miles from Ratcliffe Culey), in the Parish of Sibson Leicestershire and had been there since the 1760’s. It is possible that this family is an offshoot of the Parsons family of Norton Juxta Twycross who can be traced back to the 1600’s.

The Parsons, Tonks (originally Tuncks) and Bolstridge families all came into the area in the 1760’s at a time when these parishes were being enclosed. They were mainly agricultural labourers and gardeners but all seemed to have prospered well. The Bolstridge family were originally from Bedworth near Nuneaton and still had close ties with the area. The Tuncks family seem to originate from the Canwell and Hill arrears of Sutton Coldfield on the border with Middleton Shenstone and Weeford parishes. I am actively researching this link at present.

My late wife's maiden name was Gulliver and her Great Grandfather settled in Tipton Staffordshire in 1858. He originated from near Bicester Oxfordshire although his ancestors were the ancient Gulliver family of from Banbury, Oxfordshire, mentioned by Swift in his preface to the first edition of Gulliver's Travels. Her family can be traced to the late 1500's in the area surrounding Banbury.

I have extensive data on the following families and would be pleased to share and exchange further information.

The Tonks family of north Warwickshire and Leicestershire.

The Huddleston family of north Leicestershire.

The Allen family of north Leicestershire. (Jane Allen was Maria Huddlestone’s mother).

The Gullivers of Oxfordshire, (I have further information on this family apart from that shown in the report below).

The Bolstridges alias Bulstrode of Bedworth. Note that the Bolstridges of Bedworth in the report below start at Generation 12. Generation 18 includes the family of William Bolstridge and Charlotte Butler who emigrated to New York in 1850.

The internet tree on this homepage gives a 22 generation view of my son’s ancestors.
