Notes for Polly Ann Slone Thacker: According to F.E.M.
On the same day she married James, she asked the Pike County Court to appoint James's brother Archibald as her guardian. Archibald resigned as her guardian the same day, presumably after Polly & James married. Eliza Slone, daughter of James's brother Joab, did basically the same thing - that is, have a guardian appointed in order to get married (see notes for her).
According to family oral tradition, Polly was supposedly "black," but she is listed as "white" on the census. There is similarly conflicting evidence with James's first wife Mary S. Havens (see notes for her). It wouldn't surprise me if she were a light-skinned black person, since two of James's brothers, Joab and Amos, also married women of mixed-race ancestry.
Cecil Slone says: "My mother, Hazel (Pinion) Slone, told me that my grandmother, Elizabeth (Adkins) Slone, had said that John & Malcomb Slone, Epp & Liza Smith were half brothers and sister to the William Slone that is listed as being the son of James Slone and Polly A. Chaney." This would imply that Polly was m. to a Chaney first! This seem to fit. needs more evidence!! F.E.M.
1860: Not listed w/mother or Slone grandparents. 1870: appears to be living w/grandparents Archibald & Nancy Slone. 1877: son Wm. was born, out of wedlock? Father Morgan Slone? 1880: where is she? not listed w/Elizabeth Slone Cole. Assuming m. to James Slone. 1893: m. record say mother's name is Betty Slone b. in Pike Co. Ky. 1900: sons Malcomb & John Slone w/her. 1920: living with son-in-law Calahan Charles

2) The 1870 Census, Pike Co, KY: Dist 1, #252 Carlotta Chaney 38, Abner Chaney 35, Mary E Chaney 13, Edward Chaney 11, Sarah J Chaney 5 (is Polly Ann the same as the Mary Elizabeth shown here? - if so, both the name and age are a poor fit. Secondary sources list parents of Abner Chaney & Charlotte Goff as Thomas Greenberry Chaney & Sophia Campbell; and Edward Goff & Isabella Coleman, respectively. All of those people are listed as "white" on census records. There was, however, a mixed-race Goff family associated with Pittsylvania County, Virginia, from where the Slones had migrated, and note, for example: Dorcas M. Hobbs, John W. Picklesimer Jr. "Pike County, Kentucky Death Records 1849-1909," pg 44: Elizabeth Goff, colored, d. 1876.
