Notes for M.D. John Kendrick Castleberry:
John Kendrick Castleberry and Oriter Partin, daughter of Coledoina Cornelison and William Anderson Partine where married by John's Father, Re. Simeon Castleberry on April 18, 1900 in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

After his marriage he studied in Galveston, Texas, St. Louis, Missouri, Memphis, Tennessee, graduated in 1904 from Gate City Medical College and School of Pharmacy in Texarkana, Arkansas, Texas. He went on to Cincinnati, Ohio where he studied Medicine and Surgery, interning in the General Hospital in that city and graduated in 1908. On January 21, 1908 he was admitted by the State Board of Medical Examiners of Texas to practice Medicine and Surgery.

For a short time John practiced in Shelby County, Texas, but later settled in the Sacul Community of Nacogdoches County and finally opened a practice on the former site of the Old Stone Fort which had stood on Main Street, now the site of the Commercial State Bank. He also practiced in Angelina County, Texas, where he lived for a short while.

He was a life member of a Scholastic Medical Fraternity in Cincinnati called "Eclectic Philpmathians". John was also a member of the Masons Milam Lodge #2 and reached the highest degree of Royal Arch Mason.

Oral Family History related a story about John Kendrick Castleberry:
" About 1914, when Doctor Castleberry had an emergency call to attend a patient who had suffered a broken leg by a falling tree as the road was being pushed through (widened) to Reklaw, his gallant steed, "Jeff", pulled up lame, and Doctor Castleberry continued his Cal on foot, -- having left his horse, "Jeff", with others for feeding and care.

After this unfornatute experience, Doctor Castleberry became the owner of the first automobile in that part of Nacogdoches County, whereupon he employed a chauffeur to drive his new "gasoline buggy" on calls, and to teach his to drive." CASTLEBERRY AND ALLIED FAMILIES

Other Oral Family History states that he and his nurse (Dora Pearl Hough Terry) poisoned Oriter "Artie" Partin and Luther Ulyesses Terry, so they could be married. Mrs. Pauline Turner Tillis, remember the stories he Mother told her about the death of Oriter Partin Castleberry, who was her, Exra Partin Turner's cousin. The stories say that Dr. Castleberry became involved with his nurse and wanted to marry her but she was already married as was he. The story goes on to say that Dr. Castleberry helped the nurse dispose of her husband and then used the same type of poison to kill Orator, and then after a reasonable time Dr. Castleberry married the nurse. This writer has never found anything to prove or to disprove this story; but, Dr. Castleberry did remarry to Dora Pearl Hough Terry the widow of Luther Ulyesses Terry.

Just two short years later Dr. John Castleberry died of pneumonia.[King.ged]
