The only way you would see this historical marker as I did, is to retrace some of your ancestor's footsteps (131 years ago in my case) as I did through the Cumberland Gap on the historic Wilderness Trail itself (3 Jul 2000)! The feeling of excitement and historical meaning of this trail for my ancestors caused me to reflect deeply on my roots and how my ancestors must have felt as I walked through the gap, visibly narrowed by more than a century of wild vegetation and the absence of horses and wagons since it's pioneer glory years.
