Notes for William H. (Johan Heinrich Wilhelm) Paschen: undated, unidetified obituary of Wi;lliam H. Paschen DEATH TAKES WM. PASCHEN Prominent Resident of County Dies This Morning William H. Paschen, 70 years old, prominent resident of the community, passed away this morning at 7:15 o'clock at his country home about a mile and a half northeast of Monticello. Suffering a stroke Monday morning at 1115 o'clock, he had remained in a coma and his condition had been critical since that time. The well known man has been in failing health for the past four years........... Born in Mecklenburg, Germany on Oct. 29, 1872,. Mr. Paschen was the son of William and Mary A. (Brandt) Paschen. He came to this country with his parents in 1881, when he was but nine years of age, and came directly to White County, locating in Monticello. He had always lived in the vicinity of Monticello. His father died only two months after the family's arrival from their home in Germany, and Mr. Paschen, when a youth took up the permanent vocation of agriculture, through his industry and progressiveness becoming one of the influential and leading citizens of the community. Mr. Paschen was married to Fredie Bernfield, of Monticello, on February 13, 1899. At the time of his marriage he purchased land in Big Creek township, later selling it in 1906 and purchasing 75 acres of land in Union township, a part of the present family homestead. In 1910 he bought a hundred acres to add to his holdings, to enlarge the home farm. The family has resided at their present country home for the past thirty two years. Former Trustee Active in democrat politics, Mr. Paschen was elected Union Twp. trustee in 1914, serving for a term of four years. A number of years ago he also served as county highway superintendent for two years. Mr. Paschen was active in civic affairs for many years. Four children were born to the union, Leslie H. Paschen, of Monticello; Mrs. Esther Million of near Delphi and Miss Ruth Paschen, residing at home. Survivors are also seven grandchildren, Patricia, Ruth anne and James Edward Paschen; Constance and Carolyn Ashley; and Douglass and Lucille Million; also a half sister and a half brother. The well known man was an active member of the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church at Reynolds. Funeral services will be conducted at the family home Monday afternoon at two o'clock. The Rev. Herbert Petrich, pastor of the Reynolds Lutheran church will officiate. IN 1881 the family crossed the ocean and from the seaport came at once to White County, locating in Monticello. The father was a working man, and lived only 2 months after reaching this country. He left a widow and 3 children, all of whom are living, namely: William H. Paschen; Henry, who has a good farm of 133 acres in Cass County, married Miss Bertha Doll, and they have four children; and Emma, the wife of John H. Colbo, a farmer in Pulaski County, Indiana, and they have four children. Mrs Paschen married for her second husband John Colbo, and is a resident of Francesville. They are members of the German Lutheran Church......... ....On February 13, 1899, Mr Paschen married Miss Fredie Bernfeld, daughter of Fritz and Henrietta (Dahlenburger) Bernfieldt. Mrs. Paschen was born in White Co., Ind., July 14, 1876, and was the fourth born of her parents' five children, two sons and three daughters, and three of the number are yet living: Dora, wife of Fred Herman, a farmer of White Co., and they have eight children; Mary, wife of Herman Schroeder, a merchant at Wheeler, Indiana, and they have three children; and Mrs. Paschen was the next born. ..........Mr. and Mrs. Paschen have four children living, as follows: Leslie H., who received his diploma from the graded schools and is now a student in the Monticello High School, and he also pursued a course in the German schools; Henrietta M. received her diploma from the grade schools and is now attending the German school at Reynolds; Esther E., is a member of the third grade; and Clara Ruth is the baby of the household. ...........in 1906 and purchased 75 1/2 acres in Union Tep., a part of his present homestead, and in 1910 he bought 100 more, making a beautiful farm of 175 1/2 acres, and lying within 1 3/4 miles of the city limits of Monticello and known as 'The Maple Knoll Farm.'......."
