My Paternal Patterson line includes the Surnames of Leech, Caldwell, Madison, Lenhart, Binning, Hand, Randles, McNeal and more. I am seeking parents and birthplace for John Patterson, b. 1760 who married - 1790 - a Mary Cladwell b-1776 in Greencastle, PA.
John Patterson and brother Thomas b. - 1752- arrive in Nottingham Twp. Washington Co., PA after 1785. I feel sure their background is Scotch/Irish Presbyterian. They purchased a 300 acre farm and when both married they split the farm. John Patterson and Mary Caldwell raised 13 children in Nottingham Twp., Wash. Co., PA. In the 1820s John went to Ohio to inspect and purchase land in what is now Coshocton and Holmes Co., OH. When John died in 1837, (buried in the Pigeon Creek Presbyterian Cemetery, Somerset Twp., Wash. Co., PA) his wife and all but two of his children moved to the Ohio Counties of Coshocton & Holmes. Of the 13 children, my line is that of Benjamin who married a Hannah Leech.
A family legend indicates that an Arthur Patterson came to Chambersburg, PA from N. Ireland in about 1750 where he raised a family with at least three sons - John, Thomas & James. I have not been able to find an Arthur Patterson in this area or time period that would prove to be the parent of my line. I am presently questioning the truth in this family story lacking proof..
Mary Caldwell's father was Robert, Grandfather William, and they did live in the Greencastle, PA area in the 1770-80s.
My Maternal line is Strouse with other surnames of Hartsel/Hartzel/Hartzell, Gable, Keener, Ritter, Switzer, Fast and more. These families came across PA and settled in and around Jackson Twp., Ashland and Wayne Co.s in OH. I trace the Strouse line to a Samuel Strouse b. 1783 in PA who then moves to Ashland Co., OH about 1830. Our first immigrant in this family was a Johann Albrecht Strauss who arrived in Philadelphia, Sept. 26, 1732. He and a brother John Phillip Strauss settled in the area of Bernville,Berks Co., PA. Four generations have been traced back to an Adam Strauss abt. 1580 in Dinkelsbuehl, Mittelfranken, Germany. I believe that they and some related families were probably part of the German/Swiss migrations (Palatines) from along the Rhine River. They were primarily Lutherns and spoke German. Although not Amish, they would probably be considered as part of the so called PA/Dutch settlers.
My Strouse/Hartsel/Keener/Gable family groups moved from PA into the areas of Wayne and Ashland co., OH. There was a large cluster in the Jackson Twp., of Ashland Co., OH. My mother was born in West Salem, OH. Some siblings were born in Burbank, OH. My mother's mother was Emma Hartsel and her parents were Jonas Hartsel and Maryanne Elizabeth Keener.
I would be glad to share much more detailled data with others seeming to have ties to any of the surnames in my Pedigree.
A Review of the InternTree below in the Report Section will provide the basic names and dates I have recorded. Posted Nov. 11, 1999.
