William Henry STRICKLAND (b. August 20, 1899, d. November 5, 1979)
Notes for William Henry STRICKLAND:
Will was borned in Aragon, Ga., Polk County August 20 1899, he was the youngest of 8 children by the time he was 18 years old he had lived in most all the Georgia Counties moving from cotton mill town to another.
When he was 8 years old he lived in Columbus for a short while, he threw newspapers in the North Highland area while living there.
When he was 17 years old his family finally settled down in Columbus, they were working in the Meritas Mill in 1915, and livingat 3213 River Rd.
Will met Elizabeth and he was smittened, he was in love. Will and Elizabeth married the 28th day of June 1919. They had 6 children, 2 of them dying at a very young age.Ralph and Virginia were very young when they pasted away, they are buried in Riverdale Cementary in Columbus, Ga.Will and Elizabeth raised 4 wonderful children, Katherine, Frank Ruth and Robert.
Will worked in the cotton mills in the spinning room as an electrician that is where he lost the two first fingers off his right hand, they were burnt off in an accident, when the mill closed Will moved his family to Double Churches where he truck farmed with a friend until the depression and seeds were scarce, Will went to work with the WPA working on road and bridge construction. He along with other men on the WPA built the bridge on Whitesville Road. After the depression Will went into parnership with a friend and built a candy kitchen, it was called "Southern Candy Kitchen". He sold his interest in the venture to a friend. Next Will went to work for A.C. Hobbs on Hamilton Rd. in a wood work shop, when Mr. Hobbs sold his machinery to Levy Gamble Will went to work with Levy. They built a woodwork shop on Gilbert Avenue where Will worked until he retired.
Will was a rowdy, rambling fellow, a bit on the wild side, he spent his Sundays in the North Highland woods (now known as Cascade Hills) with his friends, drinking, gambling and fighting roosters. He spent his Saturdays with his friends drinking and rambling, or week-ends in Florida deep-sea fishing. He enjoyed his drinking, his friends and his good times.
Although he was a drinking man he was a good father and good husband to Elizabeth, he tried to provide for his family.
Ruth recalls when they were very young of her Daddy always shooting the front door off the house on Christmas morning. He was a hunting man he always had a rifle of some sort in the house.
Will and Elizabeth moved their family to town once more, to 4516 Holly Avenue in Beallwood. A number of years after all their children had married,
all except one, Robert remained single, Will and Elizabeth moved to Fortson Georgia.
Elizabeth became sick with uterus cancer in 1959, she stayed with Frank and his family during the day while Will and Robert worked. One day on the way home they saw a fire across the pasture, it was their home, lightning had struck their house and it destroyed everything they owned.
Will, Frank and Robert set out to rebuild the house but Elizabeth pasted away before she could ever live in the new house she was only 57 years old.
The house was not the same without Elizabeth, Will and Robert became very resorceful, they learned to cook and take care of their needs.
Robert moved to Atlanta to live with his nephew James and Will met this woman, Nellie, Will moved into town, to Kolb Avenue.
Will married Nellie Mae Harper August 8, 1966.
Will lived a long and fruitful life, he pasted from this life November 5, 1979
in his sleep. He is buried next to his beloved Elizabeth at Mount Olive Cementary in Fortson Georgia, he was 79 years old.
