 Includes NotesNotes for Jerome Bonaparte:
It derived from the marriage of Jerome Bonaparte (q.v), the brother of the Emperor Napoleon I, and Elizabeth Patterson, daughter of William Patterson, a rich merchant-banker of Baltimore.

Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte, (1785 - 1879) was born in Baltimore on Feb 6, 1785. Beautiful Betsy was the belle of Baltimore when Jerome Bonaparte arrived in that city on a visit to the United States, in 1803. They met at a ball, and the handsome, impetuous 19-year-old Bonaparte fell in love with her. They were married on Christmas Eve in the city's Roman Catholic Cathedral.

Napoleon opposed the match, and in 1804 ordered his brother to return without his new bride. Despite these orders, Jerome set sail with Elizabeth. Arriving at Lisbon, she was not permitted to land, but Jerome went on to gain acceptance for his wife. Napoleon still refused to accept the marriage and when Pope Pius VII declined to annul it, Napoleon ordered it to be done in Paris. Meanwhile, Elizabeth had proceeded to England, where she gave birth to a son.

Madame Bonaparte returned to Baltimore and was granted a divorce by the Maryland Legislature in 1805. Following Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815 and the restoration of the Bourbon Monarchy, she returned to Europe and was warmly received. The Duke of Wellington was among her admirers, Talleyrand praised her wit, and Madame De Stael extolled her beauty. Many of the leading men of that time sought her acquaintance. She was re-united with the Bonaparte family, with the exception of Jerome, whom she only saw once again, during a chance meeting in a museum in Florence.

After repeated visits to Europe, Mme. Bonaparte returned to Baltimore in 1861 and remained there until she died on April 4, 1879. She lived obscurely in a boardin-house, managed her real estate, and left $1.5 million dollars to her two grandsons.
