I am researching the Black/Stubbins families. Emaline E. Stubbins, (born November 30, 1819 in Orange Co., N.C; died August 24, 1896 in Washington Co., MO), married John Haywood Black, (born September 28, 1814 in Tennessee; died October, 1899 in Barton Co., MO). They were married on February 21, 1838 in Spring Hills Co., TN.It is believed that John Haywood Black was Cherokee and Christianized his (and very likely his parents') name(s) in order to conceal his Native American identity and permit him to own property.
