Notes for Squire Tolbert Rayburn:
Squires Tolbert Rayburn Obit

Squire Tolbert Rayburn was born 15 Jun 1857 died 28 Feb 1929 at 11:30 pm at his home near Pierce, Ky. He was 71 years, 8 months and 13 days old. When a young men he came from Adair Co. to Green Co., here he met Miss Laura Ann Jeffries, daughter of Wesley and Tempa Ann Jeffries, of Pierce, Ky., and they were united in marriage 5 Nov 1884. To this union 6 children were born 3 daughters and 3 sons, Ida Mae Rayburn, who died in infancy; Mrs. S. J. Tucker, Mrs. Louetta Jones, of Pierce; and Esq. J.G. Rayburn, Pierce, Ky; Rev. J.W. Rayburn, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, Tompkinsville, Ky. and mr. A. L Rayburn, Pierce, Ky. All the children survive except the oldest daughter. S. T. Rayburn professed faith in Christ at the old Russell Creek Baptist Church about 1 year before he was married. He was a Methodist in principle but because there was no church of this denomination near, he united with the Russell Creek Baptist Church. Later when the old Houk's Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church, South was torn down and a new church of the same name was erected at Pierce, he and his wife placed their membership there where he endeavored to live up to her doctrines and principles until the end came. He died a triumphant death. Many days and weeks before the end came he was fully and beautifully reconciled to meet death. He left the strongest evidence possible for a better world. He retained his mind even down to the last hours and was the clearest of any person we have ever seen die. One among the many expressions he used after he was conscious that he was on his death bed was, "I love the Lord and all God's children and sinners too; the love of God casteth out all fears." When these words are carefully weighed we can see he had summed up all that it took to constitute a christian in this life. He further said, "He had conquered death, hell and the grave." While he was not an educated man it is doubtful any man every gave better counsel during his illness. He was subject to mistakes and made them as all men do, but on general principle he stood four-square for righteousness. His ideals were high and he had an exalted conception of a christian life, and he rehearsed all these lofty ideals which he had stood for all his life, in his last days. He appreciated a person and was quick to discern this high principle and conception in any person with whom he was associated. In conclusion he was a true and devoted companion and father. He loved and provided well for his family. Outside his family, many are able to say, "He was a friend to me and helped me over many rough places and scotched for me as I pulled many long hills." His companion had requested of him to turn his hand when he came down to the crossing of the River and he said, "I will if I can". This he did, turning his hand over as he breathed out his last breath. He died at triumphant death without a struggle. While his lifeless form remains here, his dear spirit has gone to be with the Lord.
