Ancestors of Christina Marie Wise Brown

      50. Stephen G. White, born Bet. 1828 - 1830 in North Carolina; died Bet. 1880 - 1887. He married 51. Grace Ellen Davis July 12, 1866 in Orange Co., Indiana.

      51. Grace Ellen Davis, born 1846 in Indiana; died Bet. 1871 - 1880. She was the daughter of 102. William P. Davis and 103. Nancy Morris.

Notes for Stephen G. White:
Stephen G. White was born in between 1828-1830 in North Carolina. He first married Anna Dixon, who wsa born between 1830-1832 in Indiana. They were married on April 8, 1857 in Orange Co., Indiana. Anna was the daugher of Simon and Mary Dixon of Chatham Co., North Carolina. Anna wasn't a practicing Quaker, but I believe her parents were, and know her Dixon grandparents were.

Stehpen and Anna Dixon White had three children, George White, b. 1857, Mary White, b. 1858, and Simon White, b. Oct. 14, 1859. Stephen, Anna, George, and Mary are on the 1860 Census of Paoli Township, Orange Co., Indiana.

Stephen G. White next appears on the 1870 Census of Paoli Township with a new wife. I assume that Anna died between 1860 and 1866. Stehpen G. White's second wife was Grace Ellen Davis. She was born in 1846 in North Carolina. The were married on July 12, 1866 in Orange Co., Indiana. She was sixteen years younger than he. Stephen and Grace had three children as well, William White in 1867, Nancy E. White on March 14, 1869, and Anna White on March 27, 1871. Stephen, Grace, their three children, and George, Mary, and Simon from his previous marriage, are all living together in 1870.

In 1880 Stephen G. White, and his three sons, George, William, and Simon are living in Rutherford Township, Martin Co., Indiana with Edumund M. Braxton. I assume that Grace either died, or they were divorced before 1880. I wonder where the three daughers were living at in 1880. Mary, Nancy, and Anna would have been 22yrs, 11 years, and 9 years respectively. Mary could have been married by this time, but where where Anna and Nancy living? Nancy was married in 1888 in Orange Co., so they must have been living somewhere nearby. I have been unable to locate them on the 1880 census.

While I have been unable to prove the parentage of Stephen G. White, I have many bits of information to suggest that he is related to, and possibly the brother of Carter B. White. I KNOW Carter B. White's parents were B. White and Elizabeth Barnett, meaning these would also be Stephen's parents if I am correct.

Carter B. White was born in 1813 in North Carolina, and married Ruth E. Dixon, the SISTER of Anna Dixon.

On the 1860 Federal Census of Paoli Township, Orange Co., Indiana, Stephen White, Anna, and family are living next door to Carter B. White, Ruth, and family. I speculate this is because Anna and Ruth are sisters, but also perhaps because Carter and Stephen are related.

On the 1880 Census of Rutherford Township, Martin Co., Indiana, Stephen and his three sons, George, Simon, and William are living with Edmund More Braxton. The parents of Edmund More Braxton were Hiram Braxton and Martha White. Hiram Braxton was a Quaker, but was disowned for marrying contrary to discipline. I believe that Martha White must be related to Stephen White. Otherwise, why would he be living with her son? Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find this connection.

Carter B. White seems to have a connection to the Braxton's as well. In 1850 Census of Orange Co., he is living next door to Hiram Braxton and family. He also named one of his sons, Charles Braxton White.

When you look at the Quaker records of Chatham Co., North Carolina you find many connections between the families of White, Braxton, and Dixon, among others.

Another reason the relationship of Carter B. White and Stephen G. White peaks my curiosity is because, if they are brothers, or even cousins, that would mean that my grandfather, Hearld Hammond, and his step-father, Howard Stout, were cousins. Look at the following two lines:

Line #1:
Stephen G. White m. (1) Anna Dixon, (2) Grace Davis
Nancy E. White m. Theodore H. Hammond
Raymond Clifford Hammond m. Lois Bennett (1st husband)
Hearld R. Hammond

Line #2:

Charles Braxton White m. Rhoda P. Lashbrooks
Olive White m. Arnel (Arnold) Stout
Howard Ray Stout m. Lois Bennett (2nd husband)
