Notes for Raphael Wimsatt:
Source: [John Wimsatt.FTW]

Raphael Wimsatt came to Kentucky in 1788 with Robert Abell, a carpenter, the brother-in-law of Robert Bennett Wimsatt, Sr.. With him were Stephen Wimsatt (probably husband of) Mary Lowe, who may or may not have accompanied her husband, and Joseph Wimsatt. When they arrived, Raphael's oldest child could not have been more than four years old. Walter T. Wimsatt, on a visit to Washington, D.C. told family members that Raphael had traveled with his two brothers and two sisters. But these early stories claim he also traveled with his four children, which is not likely since, as noted, his oldest seems to have been born about 1785. I have no proof of this Stephen's parents. However the name "Stephen" was carried down in Raphael's family. Joseph, too, could have been his brother. If so, I believe he may be the Joseph who obviously (according to his will (1803 see under Joseph, b. 1752) left Maryland, came to Kentucky, bought land, and for some reason returned to Maryland. This Joseph mentions a sister "Pricilla Cambron" of Kentucky as his sole heir, however. Although Raphael had a sister named "Priscilla" I don't believe she is the Pricilla referred to in the will.
Raphael left his property to his wife first, and at her death, to his four children. Witnesses to his will were Lewis Cissell, George Cissell and John Roberts.

Raphael sought pension from the government for his part in the Revolutionary War. It was finally awarded to his wife Susanna, secured for her after Raphael's death by their grandson, Sylvester. In another record Raphael states he was in the company commanded by Captain John Davison, in the second regiment commanded by Col. Price and that he continued to serve in the said corps until 1780, discharged about the 10th day of February, in the state of New Jersey and that he fought in the Battles of the White Plains and Monmouth.
In Kentucky in 1797 "Ralph Wimsatt" was deeded land from John Duncan, Deed Book 5, p. 669 and in 1805 Raphael Wimsatt was deeded land from Fr. (Francis?) Berryman, et al, Deed Book 6, p. 452, both found in the Nelson County Court House, Bardstown, Kentucky.

In the Nelson County Court House is the following: Raphael was evidentially seeking an evaluation of his property in order to obtain his pension from service in the Revolutionary War. Like government today it appears he had to keep restating his case. pension was finally secured for his wife, Susanna, not by Raphael, but after his death, by his grandson, Sylvester.
