      955. Alethaire Abell, born April 22, 1753 in St. Mary's Co., Maryland; died December 01, 1821 in Washington Co., Kentucky. She was the daughter of 1910. Samuel Abell and 1911. Eleanor O'Bryan.

Notes for Benedict Joseph Spalding:
Benedict, and his wife Alethaire, lived and prospered in their native Maryland from the date of their marriage in 1769 until the spring of 1791, when they and their ten children, along with a group of other Catholic families led by Benedict, made the long and perilous journey from southern Maryland to Nelson County, Kentucky.
The time required for a migration of this kind was about six months. Our ancestor and his family and those accompanying them traveled in covered wagons and/or on horseback until they reached Fort Pitt (Pittsburgh). The route which they used originated in southern Maryland and led from Port Tobacco to Baltimore, to Old Town, to Fort Cumberland, and thence by way of Braddock's Road to Red Stone and Fort Pitt. At Fort Pitt a flat boat was purchased or built, and a family making the hourney, along with all of its household equipment, tools, and other materials, would float down the Ohio River for a distance of 300 miles to Limestone, above present Louisville, where they would disembark and travel overland to their future home.
Benedict and his family were fortunate because his brother-in-law, Robert Abell, had emigrated from Maryland to Kentucky several years before, and he and the group of Catholic settlers with him had established a settlement on the Rolling Fork River in Nelson County, not far from Bardstown.
Benedict and his family settled in the same locality, and soon Benedict, who was a man of property, had acquired almost 2,000 acres of land, which lay on both sides of the Rolling Fork. He erected his permanent home on the south side of that stream. He dispsed of ninety-five acres across the river from his home for the use of the Catholic Church, and upon this land Clavary Church and convent were subsequently erected.
Benedict became the most active and influential citizen in the Rolling Fork community, except his brother-in-law, Robert Abell. He represented Washington County in the General Assembly of Kentucky in 1805, and became high sheriff of that county in 1809. Furthermore, he was an extensive farmer and a successful trader and merchant.
After his arrival in Kentucky, he and Alethaire had two children, making twelve, all of whom lived to maturity.
In addition to his other activities, Benedict owned and operated a number of boats or rafts, which carried merchandise, especially whiskey, from Kentucky down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to Natchez and New Orleans. This was a profitable, although risky, business due to river pirates and marauding Indians.
He was a rugged individual. He met his problems head on and overcame them. He was blessed with a gentle and religious wife who survived him by more than six years. He raised six daughters and six sons, and left his wife and all of his children well-to-do. He was the ancestor of a numerous group of hardworking and prosperous people, many of whom serve the Catholic Church as priests and nuns. He had more than one hundred grandchildren.

  Notes for Alethaire Abell:
Benedict's wife, Alethaire, had a brilliant mind and was remarkable for her amiability and other personal attractions. She was a faithful and devoted member of the Catholic Church, and instructed and brought up her children in that religion; and undoubtedly, during the first years in Kentucky she had a lot of teaching to do, not only religious, but secular. There were no schools worthy of the name, and only one or two missionary Priests in the entire area of Kentucky. There were what the Methodists would call "Circuit Riders," and rode on horseback hundreds of miles each year visiting Catholic settlements. There were no churches, and Mass was celebrated in private houses, and the neighborhood attended services there. These services were frequently held at Benedict Spalding's home on the Rolling Fork.

479 i.   Sarah Ann Edelen, born February 1763 in Charles Co., Maryland; died July 20, 1848 in Washington Co., Kentucky; married George Edelen May 14, 1785 in Charles Co., Maryland.

iii.   Edward Edelen, born 1750 in Newport Hundred, Charles Co., Maryland; died 1834 in Charles Co., Maryland; married Eleanor Boarman.
  Notes for Edward Edelen:
Edward Edelen (c. 1750-1834) was the son of Edward and Susannah (Wathen) Edelen, and the grandson of Richard and Sarah (Hagan) Edelen, 2a. above. He was born near Newport Hundred in Charles County, where his parent's tract named "Assington" was located. He enlisted in the First Maryland Regiment on January 24, 1777 and was discharged on December 27, 1779. He was a Sergeant in General Smallwood's Battalion of the Maryland Militia. He probably saw action at the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth.

In 1782, he was married to Eleanor Boarman and lived in Newport Hundred.

He inherited a portion of "Assington" from his grandfather, Richard Edelen. The tax list of 1783 shows he was seized of 364 acres of land near Newport, probably due to debt. Later acquisitions included a portion of "Boarman's Manor" and "Westwood Lodge", both lying on the edge of Zekiah Swamp near Bryantown Hundred. A few years before his death, portions of "Boarman's Manor" were deeded to his son George, and an unnamed tract of land was given to his grandson Benedict Joseph Edelen and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Edelen. Edward Edelen died in Charles County in 1834, leaving his wife one-third of the remaining property and with the remainder going to his daughter Sarah. A lot and tavern in Newport were passed on to grandsons, and other property to granddaughters.

*Portions of "Boarman's Manor" inherited by George Edelen and his wife Sarah (Jameson) Edelen have been handed down over the generations. "Sunnyside Farm" as it is now known, is currently owned by Vivian (Bounds) Edelen, widow of the late Edward Benjamin Edelen of Bryantown. Vivian is a well-known genealogist. Her family's farm has been recognized as a "Bicentennial Farm" in the state of Maryland since it has been continuously operated by the same family for over 200 years. Vivian's daughter Ann (Edelen) Boone and her husband Charles are proprieters of the "Wilshire Plains" Bed and Breakfast in Bryantown, a 1760 colonial farmhouse.   iv.   Francis Edelen, born 1760; died 1830; married Sarah Thompson 1779.
  Notes for Francis Edelen:
Francis Edelen (c. 1760 - 1830) was a brother of Edward Edelen. On July 8, 1776 he enlisted in the Flying Camp under Captain Belian Posey of Charles County. It is probable that he marched to New York and participated in that infamous battle. It is not known how long he served in the Continental Army, but in late 1779 he was married to Sarah Thompson by Fr. John Bolton.

His grandfather's will bequeathed to him the tract "Edelen's Admentment" in Charles County where they made their residence. The will of Francis Edelen provided his widow Sarah one-half of the property "Edelen's Admentment" and dwelling house, with the other half to go for the use of their single daughter Catherine and widowed daughter Mary. He died in 1830.
