Notes for Sarah Boarman: Sarah Boarman married first Thomas Mathews Jr. the brother of her step-mother (Mary Mathews Boarman )and the son of Thomas Mathews, Sr. and his first wife Hester. They were the parents of three children. They resided on 450 acres called "Hall's Place" which Sarah had received from her father. By 1678 Sarah had married secondly Thomas Mudd, the immigrant. Sarah died shortly after the birth of Henry Mudd. In 1685 a lengthy lawsuit resulted over Sarah's portion of "Boarman's Manor", her inherited property "Hall's Place." After Sarah's death, Thomas Mudd married secondly Ann Mathews, the daughter of Thomas Mathews, Sr., and his second wife Jane Cockshutt. |

Notes for John Baptist Mattingly: Reportedly settled in Kentucky during 1794. I have some questions regarding this previous fact and his age at death. Some researchers claim he died in 1817 in Washington County, Ky. but it seems unlikely that he lived to the age of 104 and fathered children up into his 80's. Rev. H. E. Mattingly reported the birth year and only one son named John Baptist. It is possible that this son died early and a second son was given this same name. Notes for John Baptist Mattingly: Will written on March 14, 1817 and proved on May 12, 1817. Pat Place shows he was born in 1713 and died in 1817. Rev. H. E. Mattingly said that John was born in 1713. But from court records, this John Baptist, Jr. was born in 1736. Much of the difficulty stems from the works of the late Jesse White, who stated that this John Baptist, born in 1736, was a son of Thomas, III. Rev. Mattingly points out that this cannot be true because of the ages of John's brothers (The eldest daughter of Clement was born in 1736) and that, in his will, Thomas, III mentioned first, his three sons, Leonard, Edward, and John Baptist. Perhaps the son born in 1713 died young but meanwhile, confusion still continues. In a deposition made in 1762, This particular John Baptist reported he was 26 years of age and the son of Thomas Mattingly and Ruth Cole. Hence, Thomas, III must have had two sons with the same name or researchers are wrong about his year of birth. Following the supposed death of his first wife, Ann Spalding, John B. reportedly married an Elizabeth. This claim produces further confusion as some researchers believe he married Elizabeth Venable. The John Baptist who married the Venable girl however, was of the Cezar line and the son of John Baptist, Sr. and Elizabeth Brewer. There is strong evidence that the descendant of Cezar never left Maryland and supports the belief that this man did not marry Elizabeth Venable. Some sources give the name of a daughter named Elizabeth who married Nicholas Yeager but this would appear to have been a second marriage for the daughter named Eleanor. This same reference states there were four children but leaves out a son named Joseph. At least one source quotes court papers which name John's children as Eleanor, Phillip, Barnaby, Gabriel, John, James, Joseph, Francis, Nancy, Bennett, and William. A considerable amount of research is still needed on John B. Re: "Colonial Settlers", "The Mattingly Family in Early America". Notes for Ann Spalding: Pat Place shows that Ann was first married to Clement Spalding and had three children - Edward, Dorothy, and Thomas. The Clement shown was born in 1706 and died before 1759 in Maryland, so it unlikely that this man, who was old enough to be her grandfather, ever married this Ann Spalding. Further study reveals that Ann's maiden name was Spalding and that she was previously married to a Fenwick. Source: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/m/a/t/William-R-Mattingly/GENE43-0004.html |
