Notes for John Medley:
JOHN MEDLEY

The year after the Ark and the Dove voyage, another ship left the shores of Engalnd headed for the Province of Maryland. On deck stood a young man, about 19 years old, watching as his young wife, and then his homeland faded from view. A gentle breeze brought to him the pungent scent of the sea. Realization came, sky and water would become his scenery for the next hundred days. He was filled with mixed feelings of lonesomeness and anticipation. The young man was John Medley. Along with fourteen other men, John Medley was transported into the Province of Maryland under the patronage and expense of Captain Thomas Cornwallys, Esq.

All of the English Medleys are said to have descended from Ranulph de Methley, who had a brother Ivo de Methley. William de Methley, a grandson of Randulph and an heir of Ivo, became the owner of the Manor of Methley. The village of Methley is still in Yorkshire, just out of Leeds. By the 1350s Medley became the accepted family name for the family of de Methley.

John Medley arrived in the Province of Maryland in 1635 as an indentured servant of Thomas Cornwallys. Thomas Cornwallys was a Catholic gentleman, born around 1605 in Norfolk, England of a family of high status, who entered the Province of Maryland on the Ark and the Dove in 1634. Although he was not related to the Calverts, Thomas Cornwallys was an important investor in the Maryland Colony. After spending twenty some years in the Province, Captain Cornwallys returned to his homeland to live, where he died around the age of 70.

John Medley was designated a freeholder and a planter by 1637, sho his service with Captain Cornwallys was brief. Young people took advantage of indentured servitude to transport themselves to a new way of life in the American Colonies. After completing the agreed years of service, to pay for their transportation, the indentured servant became prosperous plantation owners themselves.

Elizabeth Medley, the first wife of John Medley, whom he married prior to leaving England, was transported by him into the Province in 1638, shortly after he became a freeholder. John Medley had to go into debt to pay for her transportation. John Medley's first wife Elizabeth died soon after arriving, without heirs.

During the next ten years he was very active in the affairs of the Province, and was often a member of the jury. For 1650-1651 he was chosen as a Burgess for Newton Hundred, where he had his plantation. He was again recorded as the Burgess from St. Mary's County on 12/15/1757.

John Medley's second wife, Elizabeth Thompson, was transported into the Province in 1641. Her father, William Thompson, born in 1594, entered the Province of Maryland in 1641 with his wife Ann_______ and three children. John Medley received a grant from William Thompson in 1641.

John Medley's home was built on a cliff overlooking the Potomac River. Over a hundred year period, the swiftly moving waters wore away the land. It is said John Medley built a new home on the site. A storm devestated his home, and washed it into the Potomac River.
