* The Moses Pearson Family Home Page*

Updated October 19, 2005

This Homepage is dedicated to the research of Moses Pearson and his descendents. Moses Pearson (Sr.) is thought to have died in what was known as Cheraw District (now Marlboro County, S.C.) in the Pee Dee region of S.C.. His Will was written on July 10, 1762, and probated in Charleston Court, May 25, 1763.

His children named in the instrument were Aaron Pearson, Moses Pearson, Bradent Pearson, Ruth Askew, Sarah Cherry, and Comfort Pearson.

Aaron and Moses carried the name Pearson forward and many of their heirs migrated to numerous states in the years that followed. Aaron, the eldest became a large landholder. A number of generations of his heirs remained in Marlboro County before moving on to Alabama and states further west.

Moses Pearson distinuished himself in the Revolution as a Captain in the militia, under General Francis Marion. He was an ardent Whig and was noted for his staunch support of the Cause. After the War, he became one of the first Justices for the South Carolina Court for Marlboro County and served in that capacity until his death in 1800.

The heirs of Moses Pearson (Jr) or Captain Moses as he is commonly called remained for the most part in Marlboro County, South Carolina and neighboring Scotland County in North Carolina.

Nothing is known of Bradent Pearson except for the mention of his name in the Will of his father, Moses Sr, except for a notation that he served in the Revolutionary Army. Did he survive the War and move on to distant states, or was he a casuality?

The origin of Moses Pearson Sr remains a mystery to Pearson Family researchers. Early family researchers placed him in the Northern Neck area of Virginia as part of the Pearson Family of Stafford County, Loudin County, and Prince William County. He was once believed to be a brother to Simon Pearson of Stafford County (Will probate 1733) and a descendent of Thomas Pearson and Susannah Bland who migrated to Virginia in 1637 from Cambridgeshire England.

Moses's name is not to be found among the archives recounting the history of this particular family, but instead he is linked to Simon Pearson, Baltimore County Maryland. Simon Pearson, and his wife, Sarah Thurston Shaw Pearson had a son named Moses and whose records of birth are documented in Parish records in Baltimore County, Maryland in 1716

Simon and Sarah had numerous children. Next to Moses in age was a daughter named Comfort. The youngest son was named Samuel. He was born in 1723/24.

In Johnston County, N.C. in the years 1740-1770 and Wake County, N.C. (new county created), we find the same Samuel Pearson. Brother Moses's name is found upon the Deed instruments of those counties, as well as holding land adjcent to him.

A recent discovery in our search has placed Comfort Pearson, daughter of Moses, Sr. in Johnston County/Wake County as well. Her church membership records document that she was baptized by in North Carolina by the Rev. John Moore, Jr. (Baptist). The Reverend Moore was located in Johnston/Wake Counties and whose church/churches were located close to the Pearson family properties.

Information noted in the Will of Moses Pearson, Sr. leads us to believe that the only property that he bequeath was that which was in Johnston County. The description matches the local geography of the area. Wife Sarah was appointed to look after the property for the two minor children, Bradent and Comfort Pearson.

There is no record of Moses Pearson, Sr. ever having owned land in SC and the only record he was there is the fact his Will was recorded in Charleston, SC in 1763. In the preamble to the Will, he mentions he is a resident of Craven County, in the Providence of SC. The Will was written one to two years prior to his death.

Aaron Pearson and his brother Moses, appears to have migrated to the Pee Dee as early as 1759. Both their names, as well as their brother in law John Askew, appears
