Joseph Law (b. 1715, d. April 18, 1803)
Notes for Joseph Law:
As a young man, Joseph Law was a planter in Berkeley, S.C. where he was a member of the Episcopal Church.The register of St. Thomas and St. Dennis parish shows that Joseph Law married Sarah Henley, January 17, 1754.There was one child by this marriage.The register of St. Philips Parish gives the marriage of Joseph Law to Mary Jones, daughter of Joseph Jones, February 16, 1758.There was one child by this marriage.
The register of St. Thomas and St. Dennis parish gives the marriage of Joseph Law, planter, of St. Bartholomew Parish, to Mary Bradwell, daughter of Hannah Bradwell on April 3, 1765.
Joseph Law removed to Liberty County, Georgia about the year 1770. In July of 1771 Joseph, listing a wife, four children and 36 slaves, petitioned the colony of Georgia for land.He stated in that petition that he had resided in the province more than 12 months and requested 400 acres of land in St. Andrews Parish to take in the two branches of the Altamaha River called two brothers.That petition was granted.
He later in the same year petitioned for more and had his petitions granted.He was granted 300 acres more in St. Andrews Parish to take in a Branch of Morton Swamp.In August 1771, he was granted 250 acres more on a Branch of Bull Town Swamp, he claiming that he yet had upward of 5 slaves that he hadnever received land for.(Candler, Colonial Records of Georgia, vol. 11, p. 412; vol. 12, pp. 6, 121 and 255.)
In September, 1772, Joseph Law was a Justice of the Peace for the Parish of St. Johns.In December, 1772, he was a member of the House of Representatives, elected for the Parish of st. Mary's.
Joseph Law married for the fourth time, Elizabeth Spry, daughter of Samuel and Mary Spry, in Liberty County, Georgia on July 14, 1774 and had issue by this marriage, two children and possibly two more that may have been born and died in South Carolina during the Revolution.The Midway records of these two children are not clear.
In the Royal Gazette of January 18, 1781, "Joseph Law on the 24th of last month, indicted for High Misdemeanor, pleaded not guilty. Afterwards he withdrew his plea and pleaded guilty.It appeared that Law had a wife and eight children and owed considerable sums to different persons.On these considerations, Law was fined 100 Lbs. Sterling and ordered to give bond to keep the peace and good behavior for three years.
Joseph Law married a fifth time, In Liberty County, on November 3, 1785, Mrs. Mary Maxwell Sandiford, widow of Captain John Sandiford.
Joseph Law was a member of the House of Representatives in 1772, 1773 and 1774.
In a year and half he became the representative for the Parish of St. Mary. (Ibid., vol. 15, p. 349).
