Notes for Samuel Spry Law:
The Rev. Samule Spry Law was the 7th child of Joseph Law and the 1st child of Joseph and Elizabeth Spry.He was born in Liberty County, Georgia, June 2, 1775.his education was very limited, he being born just prior to the Revolution and educational advantages during his youth were confined strictly to home training. There were no schools in the country districts during the days immediately following the war. Most of the polish and grace of manner for which he was noted was acquired during a two year residence in the homr of a French Marquis on Sapelo Island. During this time he learned to speak French fluently.
He started out in life as a planter, taking great interest in military affairs and Stacy, in his "History of Midway" says that he was the first Captain of the Liberty Independent Troop of Cavalry. This is an error, according to Ben Axson. The Liberty Independent Troop was organized in 1776 and took a prominent part in the Revolution, and Samule Spry Law was not born until June, 1776 (or was it 1775].Later on, however, he became Captain of that Troop and rose to the rank of Major of the First Squadron of Cavalry of Georgia. As such, he was ordered, in 1815, to proceed to Darien with his squadron and join the Troops assembled there to repel a threatened attack by the British.
Samuel Law was fond of the gay life, he was generous, hospitable and entertaining, according to Axson.
Soon after his marriage with Rebecca Hughes, he removed his residence to sunbury, and at the age of forty, he connected himself with the Baptist Church at that place.A few years later he was ordained as a minister of that denomination. His labors being chiefly among the colored people of Liberty County, he served for a time in the Sunbury Church and also in the North Newport Church.
Second wife Rebecca Hughes is buried in the Samuel Law lot in Sunbury Cemetery. This lot is enclosed with an iron railing, erected by samuel Law's son-in-law Peter W. Fleming and carries the Fleming name in the railing. There are twenty graves in this lot, and this lot and that of the Dunham famuily, also enclosed with an iron railing and containing ten graves are all that is left of the old cemetery except five scattered markers among the undergrowth which covers the cemetery.
Samuel Law married for the third time Mrs. Temperence Wood. There were three children by this union, a total of 14 children for Samuel Spry Law.Samuel Law is buried in Sunbury Cemetery, and a stone marks the spot.
