Nathaniel Law (b. 1650, d. date unknown)
Notes for Nathaniel Law:
The name Law is found very frequently in England, Scotland and Ireland -- all of them taking a very prominent place in their respective countries and many of them being very brilliant men both in the clergy and in the political world.Just where the South Carolina branch comes from is uncertain.
(From Charles M. Law, &/1927, Marietta, GA)Bishop of Carlisle, London England, was the son of Edward Law, Earl of Ellenborough.Edward Law married Patience _________ in 1701; Patience died in 1733.Edward Law, grandfather of the Bishop, married in 1681, died 1689.The Bishop had three sons to come to America in May 16__3, landing in South Carolina.Nathaniel Law remained in South Carolina; George Law and Joe Ben Law went North.Records show George remained in New York, Benjamin went to Connecticut.The first Governor of Connecticut was Joe Law, grandson of Ben Law.Nathanuiel Law was in Carolina as a grown man in 1692, possibly born in 1650.
The first mention of a Law in South Carolina is Nathaniel Law who was appointed by Gov. Smith, April 2, 1694, an indication that he was a man of some prominence.He probably came from England or Scotland.On April 22, 1695 a warrant for land was issued to Ralph A. Izard, an Englishman who never came to America himself, for bringing into the province Nathaniel Law.That he was a man of some wealth is shown by the fact that on March 16, 1694/5 he purchased from the Lords Proprietors 200 acres on Wachindoa Creek.This must have been very shortly after his arrival.Then on January 10, 1697, Nathaniel Law purchased 1,055 acres of land in Berkeley County.On April 3, 1696 he registered his cattle marks.All this shows that Nathaniel Law was a man of some wealth when he came over.The Will of Nathaniel Law is missing, but, in an old deed in the archives at Charleston, a portion of his Will is recited and the names of six children are mentioned, three boys and three girls.
Ralph Izard was an Englishman who never came to this country, but he drew much land for sending in persons into the province of South Carolina.This fact makes one think that our family of Law must have been English.
A souvenir booklet, "Quaint Old Charleston", shows a plan of Charleston in 1704 and owners of houses, as follows:"1Pasquers; 2 Landsack;
3John Cronkeys; 4Chevelier; 5George Logan; 6Poinsett; 7Elicott; 8Starling; 9M. Boone; 10Tradds; 11Nathaniel Law; 12Landgrave Smith; 13Rhett; 14Skenking; 15Sindery.
It is known that he was living on May 25, 1708, for that day he signed a bond.
