The couple's first home was in Belmont.In 1850, he bought a plantation about three miles south of Mason which he named Spring Grove where he built a large and beautiful antebellum house.That house burned about 1909.
Richard and Frances Margaret had twelve children, all born in Fayette County.He and his family were staunch Presbyterians.He was a founder and ruling elder of both the Belmont and Mason Presbyterian churches.
In 1858, Mr. Brodnax established one of the first businesses in Mason called R. T. Brodnax and Son.His oldest son, William Francis, was his partner.
