The Rev. Richard Augustus Rives was an early member of the Virginia Conference of the Methodist Church; making his home on his farm in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, and serving churches as there was need.He is described as a man of great dignity and reserve and maintained, after the customs of those times, an almost spartan discipline among his children.
Rev. Richard A. Rives evidently received one-fourth of his father's landed estate; for, in 1810, he paid taxes of $2.34 on 481 1/2 acres of land situated on the Rocky Run in Dinwiddie County; to which, there were added by acquisition, 473 1/4 acres in 1816 and 224 acres in 1817.His slave holdings of three negores in 1802 had been increased to twelve before his death.
