As a librarian I help people in a general way to use the genealogy resources at our public library. But now I am hooked. At first I worked on my husband's genealogy and two years ago a friend said, "Ann why don't you do your own family." I posted a message on an Internet bulletin board for TOLTZIEN and PAYNE. That was a year and a half ago. The week before Christmas I received a package from a third cousin on the PAYNE side with a photograph and family sheets. How wonderful! So I am really ready to get serious. Today, January 7, 1999, I have stumbled onto this tool. Don't have my records with me but am creating this site from memory and will edit later.
The TOLTZIENs immigrated from German in the 1800s. My grandfather, Hugo TOLTZIEN, was a first generation citizen and one of six children. His parents settled in Kansas, three children were born. They moved into Nebraska and three more children were born. They later moved to Wisconsin. Hugo met and married Elizabeth PAYNE in Wisconsin. He worked as a blacksmith and later as a machinest. In 1943 he had a stroke which effected him for the remainder of his life. He died in 1967 or 1968.

Hugo and Elizabeth had one child, Fritz Joseph TOLTZIEN, born August 29, 1916, in Crawford County, Wisconsin. He married Ida BUOL November 14, 1941, in Madison, Wisconsin. They had two daughters, Ann Elizabeth (me) and Christine Marie. Fritz was a career Army officer. He died April 15, 1973, in Tucson, AZ.

Ida BUOL (born November 18, 1916) is the youngest of the eight children of Jacob BUOL and Marie HAMMERLY. They married in 1901 in Wisconsin. Jacob immigrated from Switzerland at the age of 18. He was born in 1874. He was a dairy farmer in Green County, Wisconsin. A son, Jacob, farmed the farm after the father's retirement in the early 1950s and today his son, John, farms the same dairy farm. Marie was the eldest child and first generation born in this country of parents who immigrated from Switzerland.

The surnames I am researching are TOLTZIEN, PAYNE, FOUST and BUOL. In addition to the statistics associated with any person, I am interested in the family stories that bring people to life. My resently found cousin is finding camping pictures of Hugo and Lizzie (Elizabeth)when they would go to Minnesota. I have family wills and letters I will share with others researching my family.
