Notes for JOHN PENN:
His birth date and the fact that he is the son of Joseph Penn and Mary Taylor comes from an entry in the William Edmunds journal and from the abstract of the John Taylor bible printed in the William & Mary College Quarterly, Series I, Vol. 12, 1903-1904 (the John Taylor bible information was copied from the bible while it was in the possession of Mrs. Mary Blackwell (nee Taylor) by Joe W. Taylor in 1870. The bible was thereafter destroyed by a fire sometime between 1870-1902). His Will was written 12 Feb. 1718 and was proved in Court 21 Dec. 1818.

He moved from Spotsylvania Co., VA to Amherst Co., VA about 1767. There are two Spotsylvania Co., VA deeds from John Penn, one dated 10 Feb. 1767 which describes "John Penn of the County of spotsylvania & Elizabeth his wife", and the other dated 12 Feb. 1770 which describes "John Penn of the County of Amherst and Elizabeth his wife". There are two Amherst Co., VA deeds, one from John Sandidge to John Penn "of the County of Spotsylvania County" dated 2 May 1767 of 200 acres on the Buffalo River in Amherst Co., VA and the other from John Roark "of the county of Amherst of the one part and John Penn of the same County" dated 7 October 1771 of 31 acres on Huffs Creek in Amherst Co., VA

It is not known if John Penn actually fought in the Revolutiionary War. There is an Amherst Co., VA Court Order Book record for 2 April 1782 where John Penn, Joseph Penn (his son) and many other make a claim for property impressed or taken for public service in support of the Revolutionary War. I think that this qualifies John Penn for DAR and SAR entry.

5 April 1756 - Phillip Ballard of Orange Co., VA and Ann, his wife,
to John Penn of Spotsylvania Co., VA. Witnesses were Peter Gatewood,
Alexander Pence Head and John Tureman. This does not related to John Penn,
Jr. Instead, it relates to John Penn, son of Joseph Penn and Mary Taylor (my
ancestor). He married Elizabeth Munford. On 10 Feb. 1767, "John Penn, Jr."
and Elizabeth, his wife, "of the county of Spotsylvania" deeded 200 acres
which he acquired from Phillip Ballard to John Holloday. This same John
Penn, with wife Elizabeth, moved to Amherst Co., VA in 1767 where John Penn
"of Spotsylvania Co., VA" acquired 200 acres in Amherst Co., VA. Then there
is a deed in Spotsylvania Co., VA on 12 Feb. 1770 where John Penn and
Elizabeth, his wife, "of Amherst Co., VA" deeded 265 acres in Spotsylvania
Co., VA to John Holloday. The reference in the 10 Feb. 1767 deed referring
to this John Penn as "John Penn, Jr.", was to distinguish him, the younger
John Penn in Spotsylvania Co., VA from his uncle, John Penn (who I am calling
John Penn, Jr., in this article).
