James Richard Dowdy (son of John Lottoway Dowdy and Gordie Ann Anderson) was born August 08, 1828 in Screven Co, GA, and died October 12, 1879 in Dodge County, GA. He married Mary Ann Ryals on November 07, 1847 in Telfair Co, GA.

He served with the Confederate States during the Civil war and was captured at Baker's Creek, Mississippi May 16, 1863. He was paroled at Fort Delaware, July 3, 1863. Dodge County Records also show that James R. Dowdy filed for Homestead exemption September 15, 1879.
