Just east of the village of Chateaugay, Frankline Co., NY, is the 200 acre parcel owned by Silas Pomeroy in 1800.Here he built a log cabin in what would have been virgin forest. Now, 200 years later, the land is cleared and the field cut for hay.Silas moved on to southern Ontario, Canada before 1812, possibly because of building tensions between the US and Britain over the border area, or possibly because he hoped for a better climate farther west. His brother remained in the North Country until at least 1850 where he is found in the Massena, St. Lawrence Co., NY census. |
