Welcome to the Wallace family website. This is a work in progress, so come back often to check out new information.

This particular segment of the Wallace family history begins when Joseph and Mary (Meek) Wallace (1756-1836) moved from Mecklenburg County, NC to Gallatin in Sumner County, TN in 1785. Joseph was the oldest son of Major James Wallace (1726-1795) and Amelia Bradner Wallace (1720-1790).

Joseph was born August 6, 1751 in Pittsburg, PA. He and Mary were married on January 21, 1777 in Mecklenberg County, NC. Their family grew quickly and by the time they moved to Tennessee, their first five children had been born.

Following his services in the Revolutionary War, Joseph had obtained 640 acres in Sumner County for his military services. They built a two-story log house in 1785. By the time they added a brick two-story wing in 1840, their family had grown to twelve children.

In 1795, Joseph's father, James, died in Cabarrus County, NC. His will, dated February 3, and probated in April 1795, left his oldest son, Joseph, "300 acres of land situated on the Duck River to be divided by him by lot being a part of 800 acres lying near said River, to him, his Heirs and Assigns forever." The property on the Duck River was in what was to become Marshall County, TN, some ___ miles from the Wallace homeplace in Sumner County.

By 1820, the Wallace farm had grown considerably in acreage. Most of the property at that time was utilized for raising tobacco, and was a self-sustaining farmstead which also produced corn, maple syrup, horses, cattle, and swine. This property remains in the family to this day and was declared a Tennessee Bicentennial Farm in 1996.

As fate would have it, James' grandson, Joseph Bradner, was born to Joseph and Mary on February 19, 1795, just two weeks after he wrote his last will, and about two months before he died in April 1795. He would later inherit this land from his father.
