Posthumous Reunion: From Europe to California
by Linda Penley & Victoria L. Penley
We feel as if we have met those ancestors that are found in these pages. We never met them, but we know them. We never visited with them, but we miss them. We never saw them, yet we long to see them again.
"Do not grieve for our grandparents and great grandparents because they were not affluent or much cultured. I have searched my memories of them and know that it was so because they were Christian. Humility was a virtue. They were raised to believe that any show of ostentation was not in good taste. Even if they acquired assets, they did not flaunt them as that would be prideful. These plain, humble people - the men with their rough hands and the women in their homemade clothes, were the best of us - the bedrock of our society. I remember when my mother did not wear her new hat to the school meeting because our neighbor did not have one. I remember it as though it were yesterday because it taught me that real class is the kind thing." Linda DeBorde Penley, 20 October, 2002.
Our genealogical studies have created new emotions, new thoughts, of things we never felt and of people that we never knew, and yet that we almost have memories of. Of those things, I remember.
"NEBRASKA of OUR DREAMS
Homesick for a place we've never seen,
A place we go to when we dream.
The lady with the long dark hair,
who lived by rivers, is still there.
The hymns of old which we still know,
reach our ears across the snow.
From photographs that fade and blur,
we know them as before we were.
Not gone at all, or so it seems,
in Nebraska of our dreams."
