Generation No. 1

1. THOMAS1 CARL was born March 24, 1802 in ,Dutchess, New York, and died January 14, 1891 in Gentry, Benton, Arkansas. He married (1) NANCY M. (NANA) SHED Abt. 1823 in ,,Tennessee. She was born November 26, 1804 in ,,Tennessee, and died September 01, 1839 in Cederville, Crawford, Arkansas. He married (2) SARAH CYNTHIA MAXWELL Abt. 1841 in ,,Arkansas. She was born January 06, 1811 in ,,Tennessee, and died February 21, 1871 in Gentry, Benton, Arkansas.

Notes for T
HOMAS CARL:
!Burial: Word Cemetery. Cemetery is located on the Spavinaw Creek
about 3 miles from Decatur, Arkansas.

!On October 9, 1957 Kirt Reynolds of Fort Worth, Texas wrote a lette r to the Dutchess County (New York) Historical Society asking for hel p in locating the parents of Thomas. The following information was i ncluded: Thomas Carl was born in Dutchess Co, NY on March 24, 1802; d ied in Benton Co, Arkansas on January 14, 1891; buried in the Word Ce metery on Spavinaw Creek about three miles from Decatur, Ark; marrie d Nancy M. Shedd (Shed, Shedd, Shead) about 1820-22 in Tennessee. H e went to Tennessee from New York, then to Arkansas about 1839, wher e he reared his family. Older members of his family say that Thoma s Carl's father and his bother fought with "Mad Anthony" Wayne in th e Revolution, and that Thomas' father was a Presbyterian and his brot her a methodist.

!Received from Mary Clark, Aug. 1999: Thomas Robert Carl, born 24 Ma r 1802 in Dutchess Co, NY, married Nancy M. Sheid in Coffee Co, TN ab out 1823, died 14 Jan 1891 in Gentry, AR, buried in Word Cemetery 3 m iles from Decatur, AR.
Possible parents: William Carle "Keerel" & Anna Finger (Anatje Finger ).
Benton Co. Court House Record: Thomas Carl brought from Nancy & Wm. B lythe, 80 acres for $350, E 1/2 NE cor. of Sec. 31, Twp 20, N of Rang e 30w.
Mary received some information from Jim Marrs, P.O. Box 189, Springto wn, TX 76082 and from Rea Marrs Jameson, Box 848, Albany, TX 76430 . Children of Thomas & Nancy were: Elizabeth, James, Manson, Barton , Thomas and Jessie. Thomas was a tailor & farmer.
Thomas married second to Sarah Cynthia Maxwell and had children: Nanc y, Sara, Sybell, William S., John, Zackery, Newton & Henry. Willia m was born in 1846 in Benton Co and married Mary in 1866 in Benton.
Note: I am not ready to accept William as a child. He should have ap peared in the 1850 census with Thomas as a 4 year old, but did not. A HM

!NOTE: The 1820 & 1830 census below are listed to show a probable rel ationship between Thomas Carl and Jacob Carl who moved his family fro m Dutchess County, New York in 1814. They settled near Hillsboro (an other name for Leper's Fork).

!1820 Census: TN, Williamson Co
Jacob Carl-(2) males 10-16, (1) male 16-18, (2) males 18-26, (1) mal e over 45
(3) females 10-16, (5)f 16-26, (1)f 26-45, (1)f over 45
The first two males (10-16) would be Jonathan 15 and Daniel 13, the n ext male (16-18) would be Jacob 18, Joseph 24 would be in the 18-26 g roup, however there is an extra male there, the last male is Jacob 54 . Jacob had no females 10-16 so all three are extra. In the 16-26 w ould be Elizabeth, but it looks like they put Sarah 29 in there als o because Nancy 31 belongs in the 26-45 group. That means there ar e 3 extra 16-26 females. The over 45 female is Phebe 52. The extr a male (who I think is Thomas) and 6 extra females may nephew and ni eces of Jacob. Jacob is the only Carl listed in the 1820 census fo r all of Tennessee.

!1830 Census: TN, Williamson Co, p206
Jacob Carl-(1) male 15-20, (2) males 20-30, (1) male 60-70, (2) femal es 20-30, (1) female 60-70
The 15-20 male is too young to be their's and didn't show up on the l ast
census. The (2) 20-30 are correct for Jon (who wasn't married yet) a nd Dan
the youngest. The (2) 20-30 females could be from the group of (3) 1 0-16 in the last census. Nancy and Elizabeth are both married. At 3 9, Sarah may have a family of her own although the only marriage we k now of was a age 41.
Thomas is married by now, but the extra females are probably his sist ers. I still don't know who the 10-15 year old male could be.

!The genealogical quarterly Backtracker, vol 22, no. 4, had a histor y of the Carl Family in Arkansas. It starts out "Thomas J. Carl, gre at, great grandfather of the present Joe Carl of Gentry Hardware, wa s born in New York in 1802. At a young age his parents moved to Tenn esssee. The year 1834 found them traveling up the Arkansas River whe re they settled in Cedarville, close to Figure Five on the old 'Arm y Road' and the Butterfield Overland Stagecoach Road. Thomas & his w ife Nana had six children, born at Cederville. Nana died in 1840 an d is buried at a cemetery near Cederville. Thomas moved his family t o the Mason Valley area in Benton County and married Cythia J. ___ o f Bentonville. This marriage produced seven more children.
When he moved to Mason Valley, he settled near Ray's Mill on Osage, w hich is south of the Lee Harris Hatchery, east of Vaughn. He later m oved to Prairie Grove and spent the rest of his life in that area."
Note: It is possible that Thomas' father was a relative of Jacob.
We need to research this further. Al Mayfield has a copy of the whol e article as well as a much more extensive history on the same famil y published in the Benton County Pioneer, vol 35, no. 3.
NOTE: We know that all 6 of the children by his first wife were bor n in Tennessee, not Arkansas. The move to Arkansas was probably mad e in 1839.

!Note: Cedarville is located in Crawford County, Jasper Township. I t is 11 miles north of Van Buren. In 1884 it had a population of 97 . Van Buren is on the Arkansas River.

!History of Benton County, Arkansas, page 396: Thomas Carl (1802-1891 ) and wife Syntha Shed Carl (1811-1871) are buried in the Word Cemete ry where also their son H. C. Carl (1853-1932) is buried. Thomas ha s a son who is a merchant in Prairie Grove, Washington Co, Ark who i s in 1889 Goodspeed's Wahington County History. This son, Barton A . Carl, tells of his father coming to Arkansas in 1832* from Tennesse e and that his mother was a native
of Tennessee while his father was a native of New York.
The Carl families of Benton County settled adjacent the Oklahoma b order, which the Word community is located. Some came down the line , settling just north of present-day Siloam Springs. The post offic e for this settlement was Hico.
Note: The article goes on to name several cemeteries and the Carl fam ily members buried there. Al Mayfield has a copy.
*Note: This is a misprint. The article says 1839.

!1830 Census: TN, Franklin Co, P71
Thomas Carl: males 2 <5, 1 20-30; females 1 5-10, 1 20-30. This T homas
fits the age of "our" Thomas and could have been the extra 18-26 mal e with Jacob in 1820. The 2 males <5 would be James and Mason. Th e 5-10 female is probably a daughter we have not heard of and the 20- 30 female would be his first wife Nancy.

!1840 Census: Cannot find Thomas in Arkansas. I found a Thomas Carr oll in Saline Co, AR who was the right age, but the children's ages d id not match up at all.

Noble Carl, 521 Briar Drive, Houston, TX (b. 1905), grandson of Joh n Hammack Carl (b. 1847) states that Thomas Carl's (b. 1802) father c ame to the U.S. age 14 as a stowaway. Maybe talking about Thomas Car le (b. 1735 in Ireland),
father of William Carls.

From Flashback, May 1778-Mrs. Roy (Kay) Brumfield, Ceder Hill, Rt. 1 , Fayetteville, AR 72701 asks for information on Thomas Carl, b. Ma r 24, 1802, Dutchess Co, NY. Married (1) Nancy M. Shedd, b. Nov 24 , 1804. They travelled through Tennessee to Mulberry, Arkansas, wher e Nancy died, leaving 7 children. Sometime between 1837 & 1840, he m arried (2) Cynthia Maxwell and had 7 more children. He lived in Gent ry and is buried in Word Cemetery. A Mrs. Luther Thomason, daughte r of William S. Carl, is supposed to own the oldest family Bible whic h might show Thomas Carl's parents. Anxious to get in touch with an y descendants of Mrs. Thomason.

Thomas was a tailor from New York.
