Notes for PIERRE PREVOL - PREVATT:
Peter was born about 1693, 8 years after King Louis XIV had revoked the Edict of Nantes, which had originally been issued in 1598 by French King Henry IV to grant rcomplete religious freedom to the "Huguenots" in France. The Huguenots, as they were referred to, were a protestant minority in France, mostly following the doctrines of John Calvin. The majority in France were still Catholic, and the Protestants faced severe persecution. On August 24, 1572 (Saint Bartholomew's Day), thousands of Huguenots were drowned in Paris alone. They were massacred all over France. This initiated a civil war which ended with the ascension of Henry IV, a Protestant, to the throne. But life in France for the Huguenots became increasingly difficult under the later rule of Kings Louis XII and Louis XIV. After 1685 as many as 800,000 Huguenots left France, seeking refuge in Britain, Germany, Switzerland and Colonial America.
Pierre Prevol (French spelling of surname) arrived in America in 1700. He landed at Jamestown, Virginia, listed among the passengers of the ship Peter & Anthony, which embarked from London carrying French Huguenot refugees.
