The Hammond line for this family can be traced to John B. Hammond and Christana Norfleet in Virginia, in the mid-1700's. The Browning branch is descended from John Browning Sr. in Jamestown, Virginia Colony abt. 1650.Descendents in these lines include George Washington Hammond and Martha Susan Birdsong, Norfleet Hammond and Dorcas Isreal, James Pelham Humphries, William C. Browning and Rachel Carithers, William Henry Humphries and Susan D.(or Baird)Gentry, John Wesley Erwin and Emma Lair Humphries, James Wellington Browning and Joan Elizabeth Holder.
There are Revolutionary and Civil War veterans included, both North and South. There are circuit-riding preachers, politicians, slave-owners and the enslaved, along with overseers and abolitionists. There are farmers, carpenters, Indian-fighters and Indians, a rich man who never knew it and poor men who knew it only too well. Some say there are spys and even murderers.
