Notes for John Whitney:
Whitney Family
"Very few American families have their English genealogy in such a well
authenticated and satisfactory form as the Whitney family. Some fifteen generations
back of John Whitney was Turstin, called Fleming, who lived in the Marches of
Wales.John Whitney's father, Thomas Whitney, Gentleman of Westminster, was
not a native of the city of his residence, but had come from one of the oldest and
most distinguished families of the west of England, the Whitneys of Whitney. The
ruins of their ancestral Castle could still be seen, surviving centuries of border
warfare, on the banks of the Wye River. The Estate comprising over 2,000 acres
in the Marches of Wales, with its principal castle that remained in the family until
1893, when it was sold, there being no member of the family to hold it.
John Whitney's uncle, Sir James Whitney, Knighted by Queen Elizabeth I in 1570,
was Lord of Whitney, Thomas Whtiney, John's father, was younger brother of Sir
James.Their grandfather, Sir Robert Whitney, was knighted by Queen Mary in 1553,
and from him can be traced a long knightly line of Whitney's to the 12th Century,
when the name originated.Sir Robert Whitney married Sybil Baskerville, and
following is a copy of an affidavit proving John Whitney, Who embarked to America in
1635. As witness by my hand this October 16, 1895."
