Notes for Samuel B. Covey:
This is my great grandfather. (Rinaldo, Samuel)
Our family records say he was born in 1843, as does the 1901 census. According to the following census' he was born in 1845-46. His death certificate shows clearly his birth date as being July 5, 1848, died at 64 years 24 days, which is July 29, 1912.

Notes on this family:
1. Samuel Cov(e)y is documented as living in Athens, Ontario at the same time as our Samuel. My father said he was referred to as "Devil Sam" for his outrageous story telling. Pam Wood Waugh has tied in this Samuel with her family.
2. Her family page is at http://www.uftree.com/ FT/WebPages/ PamWoodWaugh/COVEY/ nindex.htm. Her Samuel traces back to another Samuel (UEL) from Vermont to Fort Anne, Quebec. This Samuel is given credit for producing 19 children (from possibly 2 wives). Her line descends from one of his daughters, Lydia Ann (Davis) and our line may come from any of the other 18 children. This is my main area of research at this time.

1901 Census
Did I ever send you the 1901 census records for Samuel & Hester ? They are listed next to my ggrandparents (Joseph & Margaret Morris) in Glen Morris (Charleston Lake Road). If they were across the road they lived near Wiltse Lake, if beside them somewhere around where the Lloyd McLeans lived.
I have a picture of the Glen Morris school from around 1895--if you think there might be any Coveys in it let me know & I'll scan it--unfortunately there are no names listed.
Rear of Yonge & Escott polling division 2, page 5.
Samuel Covey dob July 5 1843, C of E, carpenter
Hester Covey 29 June 1844
Rinaldo Covey 20 April 1879 farm Labourer
Delbert Covey 17 Feb 1881
Edward Covey 8 Nov 1883
Harmon Covey 9 May 1889
The Coveys lived on the right hand side of the road as you go to Charleston from Athens (lot 21 Concession 7) and the Stevens lived across the road from them (lot 22 concession 8). The Caroline Stevens above (your ggrandmother?) could be in the picture if they lived there in 1896. The origin given for all the Coveys is Scotch.

====================
Samuel was a log cabin style barn raiser. He was a large man and used an 11 lb. broad ax to hew the timbers. His strength was well known by all, as the story goes that he came across a young man in the woods trying to load a tree about 8 inches in diameter. Although Sam was already an older man, he did it single handedly. The comment from the young man was that this piece of wood was just the right size to be one of Sam's spikes. This story was told to me by my father, Neville Covey, precisely as it was told to him by his father, Rinaldo Covey. The spike he referred to would be the first chop that was reinforced with a spike into a large tree in order to cut it down. Occupation: carpenter listed on his death certificate.
===================
Another story of interest was that he swam in Charleston Lake as a boy with his first cousin, Samuel who was nicknamed Devil Sam. This is the Samuel Covey born 1849, died 1899 in Pam Wood Waugh's lineage. We cannot seem to connect them at this point. Devil Sam is portrayed on the side of a Main Street building in Athens.
====================
Also from research done by Kevin Trickey:
Samuel and Hester lived in the Charleston area and then to Soperton area, and then moved to a house on the Charleston Road one mile out of Athens. The house is next to Addie Hawkin's place. Some of the children were born in Gananoque, Soperton, Oak Leaf, Wiltse Lake and Charleston Lake. Samuel worked as a carpenter around the district. He built barns, sheds, houses, for people in the area. Sam built fences for different farms such as Godkins and Websters. Also did some logging in the area.

Federal Census of 1871 (Ontario Index)

COVEY , SAMUEL 26 ONTARIO LEEDS SOUTH Yonge (Front)
This census leads me to believe either Samuel was the son of Daniel born 1805, Samuel born 1811, or James born 1812. There was also another young man listed, James age 27.
==========================
I don't know why but in 1901 census the day and month of birth are usually right, but the year of birth rarely is correct--it is usually one or two years off. All the following were born on Ontario. The origin given for all the Coveys is Scotch, for all the Stevens is German.

Note:
At this point, we cannot be sure of Samuel Covey's parentage. He is the son of Samuel and Sally Patterson, but this connection to Samuel Hall Covey is made solely by the process of elimination and combined guesswork. There is documentation of Samuel Hall's birth and baptisim, giving us his lineage but he then apparently disappeared from records. Our Samuel is said to have inhabited Downie Island where no records were kept. Hopefully, some reader will see this and have the proof some of us have been seeking for years.
