Long-time Athens-area resident Alfred Covey died on Wednesday, 2 October 1991, at the Brockville General Hospital after being a patient there for several weeks.
Alfred Moulton Covey was born in Athens on 24 August 1922, to the late Emmett Covey and the former Pearl Hawkins. He was raised and educated in the Athens district. Mr Covey had been employed with W.B. Reynolds Fuel Coal Ltd, for a number of years, as well as with the Simpson Sand and Dredge Co. which are both in Brockville. He was also known for his carpentry and he often did odd jobs around the Charleston Lake area. Mr and Mrs Chant Curtis employed Mr Covey for a period of time as well.
During the Second World War, he served with the second Division of the Canadian Army, from 1939 until his discharge in 1945. He spent time in England, Italy, Sicily and France. While serving in England, he met, Audrey Ashton, Now Mrs Covey, Mrs Covey resides in Basildon, Essex, England.
Mr Covey enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the United Church. He was predeceased by a brother, Donald Covey who was killed in combat in France during the Second World War.
Mr Covey is survived by his sons, Brian Emmett Covey, Robert Edward Covey and a daughter, now Mrs Patricia Nunn, all now live in Essex, England. He is also survived by a brother Gerald Covey, of Charleston, and four sisters, Mrs Maurice Latimer ( Betty ) of Charleston Lake, Mrs Hilda Slack of RR 1 Athens, Mrs Freda Kelsey of Brockville and Mrs Blanche Stevens of Lynhurst, as well as six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and a dear friend, Luella Lawson of RR 1, Athens.
Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home in Athens with the funeral service being held on the Friday the 4th October in the Hansen Memorial Church in Charleston. Reverend Douglas Blair of the Athens United Church officiated during the service, Cremation followed. Pallbearers were Paul Slack, Roy Greenhorn, Ron Godkin, Bill Lenaire, Dennis Covey and David Latimer.
