"Ebenezar and Joseph Perkins, both late of New England, husbandmen, were purchasers of land in Brandywine 100, New Castle County, on Delaware, by deeds dated 10/14/1693. "
"The will of Joseph Perkins, dated 11/4/1706, and proven 8/19/1707, gave to his eldest son Joseph all the real estate, he paying legacies to the other children John, Caleb, Humphrey, Joshua, Mary and Martha. In 1724 Joseph, Jr sold the land to Caleb Perkins, Blacksmith, who married Ann Beakes."

Describing the land purchased by the brother, Scharf's History of Delaware, Vol II, 1888, pg. 903 notes:

"The "Bout" or "Boght" was a tract of land lying on the Delaware, above Vertrecht Hook, extending along the river about two miles and running back to the Rockland Manor Lands. It was first occupied by the Swedes without titles to their lands, but under the Dutch they were permitted to remain, and after the English accession warrants were issued and patents granted. One of the first was issued April 16, 1673, for three hundred acres, and was granted to Olle Fransen, Peter Mounsen and Neil Neilsen.

On the 15th of June, 1675, Governor Andros granted a patent to the above and Marcus Lawrensen for the three hundred acres already patented and four hundred acres additional, with a stipulation "that the inhabitants of Verdritege or Vertrecht Hook shall have and enjoy the privileges and freedom of Stony Creek and the mill which they have built on the same."

The mill on Stony Creek (now Quarryville Creek) was owned by a company, and was sold February 10, 1688, by Hans Petersen, Niel Nielsen and Olle Fransen to Peter Boynton, who then owned part of the Bout tract. Boynton was a merchant at New Castle, and July 9, 1684, bought of Olle or Woola Fransen one hundred and thirty-four acres on the lower side of the tract, and bounded on the upper side by Stony Creek. Subsequently he bought more land in the Bout, and on the 14th of October, 1693, he sold to Ebenezer Perkins, "late of New England, husbandman," a portion of this land; and on the same day Joseph Perkins, a brother of Ebenezer and also of New England, bought of the "Bout" lands adjoining of Thomas Noxon. The descendants of the latter still own and occupy part of the same premises."

From 1696/97 DE tax lists for Brandywine 100:

Joseph Perkins- DE will- 1706/07 wife Mar. has Exr: George Robinson listed- sons Joseph, John, Humphrey, Joshua and Caleb. John, Humphrey, Joshua and Caleb all seem to have been living in Concord Township at the time of their father's death. Remember, at this time Delaware was still simply the lower three counties of Pennyslvania.

From Robert P Case "Prosperity & Progress: Concord Township, PA 1683 -- 1983", Vol. 1, pg. 91:

"During the second and third decades of the 18th century, three members of the Perkins family, Caleb, Humphrey and Johnm lived in Concord. . . In 1722 Humphrey was added to the tax rolls, but five years later he died. Although Humphrey had a servant, he was a far from prosperous farmer. He was heavily in debt (62 pounds stirling) and the estate was probably settled only by liquidating all farm, livestock and household goods. There is no indication of where they resided , although it is possible that one or more of them could have rented and farmed the northern portion of what had been John Beal's rental property in 1683 -- the area along Featherbed Lane today."

Clues- Humphrey & Jean Perkins at the wedding of Jonathan Thatcher to Mary Wyeth 1727 Concord MM, Chester CO PA. Humphrey & Jean have dau. Rachel marr. Phinehas Lewis 1744 of Caln, Chester CO PA.

Descendents of several grandsons of Joseph Perkins continue to search for which of Joseph's sons is their direct line:

Bonnie Whitley (bonniewhit@juno.com) is descended through Reece/Reese Perkins, born about 1755. Reece had a son Reece II, born 1778 in Concord, PA who was married twice -- first unknown and second Sarah Chandler. Bonnie is descended through the unknow wife, who was the mother of Ann Perkins, born abt 1802, who married John J Clayton of Brandywine 100, DE. They named their first son Reese Perkins Clayton. Ann's brother was Reese III, born abt 1811 who married Rachel Sophia (unknown) of Concord Township, Delaware County, PA.

John is left money in his father Joseph's will, dated 1707.

John and his brother Caleb are also registered as a members of St. John's P. Episcopal Church in Concord Township, Delaware County, PA.

From Robert P Case "Prosperity & Progress: Concord Township, PA 1683 -- 1983", Vol. 1, pg. 91:

"During the second and third decades of the 18th century, three members of the Perkins family, Caleb, Humphrey and John lived in Concord. . . John appeared in the 1718 tax rolls as a landowner also, but remained in the township only another four year. . . There is no indication of where they resided , although it is possible that one or more of them could have rented and farmed the northern portion of what had been John Beal's rental property in 1683 -- the area along Featherbed Lane today. Since no will or administration papers were filed for either Caleb or John, it is likely that they left the township and took up residency in New Castle County. "
