Notes for ST MARGARET ATHELING: Connected through her mother with most of the royal families of Europe. Born in Hungary at the court of King Andrew during the period of her father's exile from England. Edward summoned back to England by the childless sovereign Edward the Confessor, his uncle. Returned in 1056, but died shortly thereafter. On Edward the Confessor's death in January, 1066, Margaret's brother Edgar, rightful heir to the trhone was only 10. the powerful Harold II became king in his place and was shortly defeated by William the Conquerer. After a failed attempt to put Edgar on the throne, Agatha fled to Scotland where they were offered sanctuary by King Malcolm. On the death of his first wife, Malcolm asked Edgar for the hand of his eldest sister. Although Margaret had hoped to become a nun, the pious couple were happily married until the death of Malcolm and Edward, her eldest son, in battle at Alwick. On hearing the new, Margaret died of shock. She was canonized by Pope Innocent IV in 1250
