| Reunions are about going home. Not necessarily to the farm where our grandparents once lived or to the suburban house where Mom and Dad refinished the basement so that you had a place to play co-ed Twister. Reunions don't need an ancestral spot to create the sense of home. Our sense of home today is not so much a matter of geography as it is a celebration of family spirit. It's that feeling you get when you walk into a room filled with family -- accepting, familiar, undeniably like you -- and you can exhale and say to yourself, "This is where I belong." Reunions are all about connecting with those people we share a past with, embrace the present with and face the future with. It's about creating for a short time the sense of community we often feel we lack in everyday life -- the same need for community that brings us to head back to church. It's the one holiday that appears on no calendar but the family's. At their best, reunions celebrate what each family feels is special about itself. |
