Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Johnson Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary at Roth Home 1882-1932
Came to This Community 32 Years Ago-Couple Presented With Several Gifts and Purse of Gold
Sixty guests, including the children, grand children, and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Hans C. Johnson, filled the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Roth, Saturday, February 27, when they gathered to observe the golden wedding of this honored couple. In good health, contented and happy, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson enjoyed the occasion to their utmost. Mr. Johnson is 75 years old and Mrs. Johnson two years younger, so many more anniversaries may still be theirs. Mr. Johnson was born in Norway coming to America with his parents when 14 years of age. Mrs. Johnson was born in Wisconsin and they met and married in Iowa, where nine of their eleven children were born. Thirty-two years ago with their family, they came to Lamberton, encouraged by Mrs. Fred Fredrickson and husband with whom they stayed until a farm was secured. Since that time this community has been their home and since that time two children, Mrs. Chris Petersen and Mrs. Phil Lohrbach were born to them, making eleven children. Life has dealt kindly with them, for of the eleven children only one has been lost to them, Mrs. Andrew Tollefson (Clara) whose death occurred a few years ago. When war was declared, two sons saw active duty over seas. The children are Joseph of Jeffers, Mrs. Theodore Paulson (Emma) of Revere, John of Walnut Grove, and the twins Albert and Alfred and Mrs. W.C. Roth (Ella) all of Lamberton, Charles and Mrs. Chris Petersen (Sophia) of Lamberton, and Mrs. Phil Lohrbach (Annie) of Walnut Grove. All were present, except Harry, who was unable to attend. There are also 46 grand children and 3 great grand children. The children planned and carried out the celebration in the spacious home of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Roth, where other guests present included their grandsons George and Robert Johnson of Waseca, their granddaughters, Miss Cora Tollefson of Walnut Grove and her father, Andrew Tollefson, also Rev. and Mrs. C.G. Olson of the Sharon Lutheran Church of which Mr. and Mrs. Johnson have been long members, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Roth, Dr. and Mrs. C.C. Walker, Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Koenig. Entering the living room, a huge bell of whit and gold was attractively hung and bowls of narciccus in the rooms as well as the wedding cake which was the center feature in the dining room, all carried out the color scheme of gold and white. The one o'clock dinner was all that a wedding dinner should be and was lovingly provided by the children. G.A. Koenig acted as toastmaster and responses were made in tribute by Rev. Olson and by Joseph Johnson, a son. Two solos were also sung by Rev. Olson and congratulations were extended with the hope that many happy years await this couple in the home in this city to which they have retired. Several beautiful gifts, including a purse of gold, were received by the wedding couple. Among the interesting features is the fact that 25 years ago on their silver wedding they attended the wedding of their oldsest son, Joseph. Now 25 years later, they had the unique privilege of celebrating their golden, while their son and wife celebrated their silver wedding. Rev. Olson read the narrative of the wedding in Cana, at which Jesus was the guest of honor and spoke briefly of the happiness and security of the home, where Jesus is a constant who unseen guest. In the spirit of Browning, "Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be," Rev. Olson showed how many of the finest joys of wedded life have been mellowed and matured in the alternating vicissitudes and joys of life. "I love you Truly" and "Just for Today", sung by Rev. Olson, enhanced the tributes paid. At the regular meeting of the Sharon Lutheran Aid which met at the home of Mrs. Wm Roth on March 3 and of which Mrs. Johnson has long been an active member, Rev. Olson presented to Mr. and Mrs. Johnson a book of daily devotions, bound in leather with gold lettering and trimming to commemorate their anniversary. Before presenting the gift, Rev. Olson spoke a word of appreciation to Mrs. Johnson and expressed the wish that the evening of their lives might be as beautiful as the morning and that it might be warm with the glow of tender memories and gladdened with the presence of Christ.

Newpaper clipping: Albert Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Johnson, who has been in the thick of the fight "over there" is expected home soon. A letter received today contains the glad news that he expects to sail Sunday.

Newspaper clipping: Glad to Serve Country, But Home Looks Good to Him
Feeling fine, willing to stay on in the land "over there" as long as Uncle Sam needs him, but acknowledging that "there is no place like home," Albert T. Johnson, has written three letters home since the Hun war elements asked for and were granted an armistice. Young Johnson writes letters of unusual cheer, but for all that there's an unmistakable longing for home- for the day when he "can step off the train at Lamberton." He states that it is the idea of the boys that the first "over there" will be the first to return, and figuring thus, he concludes two months time will see him headed for home. Young Johnson was wounded in the arm September 13, but he gave out no hint of it to his people here. Their first instructions of his wounding came by way of wire from Washington on December 3. He was then in the hospital but is now believed to be recovered.

  Notes for Harold S. Johnson:
Newspaper clipping: Harry Johnson, one of the last contingent of drafted men to be sent to Camp Dodge, has been granted two weeks furlough on account of the illness of his wife, and he arrived here the first of the week. He says that the army looks good to him as far as he has gone and that he is glad to be able to do his bit.

Newspaper clipping: Harry Johnson, one of Redwood county's world war veterans, who returned from the conflict wearing a wound stripe (having been shot in the left arm) and a set of porous lungs as a result of being "gassed" went to Minneapolis Tuesday to commence treatment at one of the hospitals for disabled "Buddies" in that city. A recent examination of his lungs showed them to be perforated as a result of the gas and he is being cared for by the Red Cross society, our informant stated. Let us hope that this treatment will be thoroughly successful and Harry be returned to us in possession of full health and capacity for service during these times of peace.
