Funeral Held for Vally Foster
Funeral services for Vally Foster were held Tuesday, November 18, 1975 at the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Arthur Standring officiating. Mrs. Robert Syverson was organist and Douglas Dahms was soloist. Pallbearers were Roy Harnack, Leonard Drever, Warren Pack, Russell Buterbaugh, Jerome Swenson, and Henry Flesner. Interment was in the Walnut Grove Cemetery. Mr. Foster died Saturday, November 15, 1975 at the Tracy Hospital. He had entered the hospital on his 89th birthday. Vally Leroy Foster was born November 4, 1886 at Kelley, Iowa son of Albert and Lucy Foster. On December 14, 1910 he married Jessie Johnson at Laurens, Iowa. They farmed at Laurens, Iowa until 1920 when they moved to the Revere-Walnut Grove community. They farmed until 1947 when they moved into Walnut Grove. He was a member of the United Methodist Church. Mrs. Foster died in December 1967. Since major surgery last November, Mr. Foster has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. O.V. Giersdorf, and his son Cecil. He is survived by three sons, Vernon Foster of Tracy, Cecil and Darlow Foster of Walnut Grove, and two daughters, Mrs. Geneva Benedict of Sioux Falls and Mrs. O.V. Giersdorf of Walnut Grove. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews and cousins. Relatives from a distance coming for the funeral were from Mason City, Laurens, Albert City, and Ruthven, Iowa; Artesian, Mitchell, Fedora, and Sioux Falls, SD; and Blue Earth, Brooklyn Park, Sanborn, Worthington, Cottonwood, Morgan, Tracy, and Revere.

Mrs. Vally Foster Dies, Funeral Will Be Friday
Funeral services for Mrs. Vally Foster, 76, of Walnut Grove will be held at 2:30 pm Friday, December 22, at the Walnut Grove Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Berg of Tracy officiating. Interment will be in the Walnut Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jerome Swenson, J. R. Buterbaugh, Oliver Nelson, Roy Harnack, Leonard Drever and Floyd Giersdorf. Mrs. Foster died at her home Tuesday noon, December 19, 1967, of a heart attack. Jessie Dagmar Johnson Foster was born October 13, 1891 at Laurens, Iowa, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Johnson. On December 14, 1910, she was married to Vally L. Foster at Laurens, Iowa. They farmed at Laurens until 1920, when they moved to a farm in the Walnut Grove-Revere community. They farmed until 1947 when they moved to Walnut Grove. She is survived by her husband, three sons, Vernon Foster of Blue Earth, Cecil Foster of Walnut Grove, and Darlow Foster of Revere, and by two daughters, Mrs. Geneva Benedict of Watertown, S. Dakota,and Mrs. O.D. (Lorraine) Giersdorf of Walnut Grove, and by 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She is also survived by four sister, Mrs. Selma Gulbranson of Pocahontas, Iowa, Mrs. Ellen Smith of Ayrshire, Iowa, Mrs. Hedvig Breed of Van Cleve, Iowa, and Mrs. Naomi Rehm of Ruthven, Iowa, and by two brothers, Elmer Johnson of Ruthven, Iowa and Clarence Johnson of Curlew, Iowa. One sister, Hazel, preceded her in death.

Vernon L. Foster
Vernon L. Foster, age 80, was born August 22, 1911 at Laurens, Iowa. He was the son of Vally and Jessie Johnson Foster. The family moved to the Revere, Lamberton area in 1920 and Vernon received his formal education in rural Revere schools and also attended Lamberton High School. He worked on several farms in his early years. He was united in marriage to Viona Swenson at Walnut Grove and the couple farmed in the Walnut Grove and Tracy area until 1957, when they moved to Tracy. He worked at Midland Fertilizer Plant in Tracy, later moving to Blue Earth living there from 1963 to 1968 when they moved back to Tracy. He worked at the Farmers Elevator Fertilizer Plant in Tracy until retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Walnut Grove and the Tracy Country Club. Vern loved to golf, enjoyed bowling and playing pool at the Senior Citizens Center in Tracy. Vern was golfing at the Tracy Country Club on Monday, July 6, 1992, when he suffered a heart attack and was pronounced dead at the Tracy Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Viona, of Tracy, three daughters, LaDonna (Mrs. Phillip) Hassenstab of Mason City, Iowa, LeOna (Mrs. Donald) Haase of Blue Earth, Mn, and Ms. Lori Keller of Apple Valley, Mn, eight grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Lorraine Giersdorf of Walnut Grove, Mn, two brothers Cecil and Darlow Foster of Walnut Grove, Mn and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Geneva Benedict.

Services for Geneva Marine Benedict, 77, of Walnut Grove were at 10:30 am Tuesday, January 7, 1992, at Butson-Jacobson Funeral Home in Walnut Grove with Rev. James Hodak officiating. Burial was in St. Paul's Calvary Cemetery in Walnut Grove. Casket bearers were Rob Peterson, Harvey Dallenbach, Dallas Rank, Darold Gullickson, Richard Foster, and David Doubler. Mrs. Benedict died Saturday, January 4, 1992, at her home in Walnut Grove. She was born January 24, 1914, in Laurens, Iowa, to Vally and Jessie (Johnson) Foster. She moved with her family to Revere, MN, in 1920 and attended Revere Grade School in District 27. She was graduated from Lamberton High School in 1932. She and Joseph Benedict were married January 15, 1940 in Milbank, SD. They resided on a farm east of Walnut Grove, where she purchased a dress shop. In 1965, she moved to Watertown, SD, where she purchased the Corner Bar. In 1975, she moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where she managed a restaurant. Later, she moved to Balaton, MN, where she sewed for Green Thumb. She had resided in Walnut Grove since 1989. Mrs. Benedict spent most of her later years quilting for herself and others. Survivors include her brothers, Vernon Foster of Tracy, Cecil Foster and Darlow Foster, both of Walnut Grove and her sister, Lorraine Giersdorf of Walnut Grove. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one nephew.

Obituary of Joseph Benedict
Joseph Thomas Benedict, son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Benedict, died at the Community Hospital at Springfield on June 19, 1959. His health began to fail this spring from a heart condition. He was taken to the Springfield Hospital June 9th, and his illness was complicated with an attack of pneumonia. He became critically ill on June 17 and passed away Friday morning. Death was due to a heart attack. He had reached the age of 54 years, 6 months and 6 days. He was born December 13, 1904, at Chicago, Illinois. The family moved to Black River Falls, Wis. and in 1909 to the farm in North Hero township, which has since been his home. He was married to Geneva Foster of Walnut Grove on January 14, 1940 at Milbank, So. Dak., who survives him. Funeral services were conducated at St. Paul's Catholic Church at 10 am Tuesday, June 23, with Rev. Father Roney officiating. Music was by the church choir. Interment was in the family lot at Calvary cemetery. Pallbearers were Forrest Stump of Sherburne, Leo Gebhard of Lamberton, Roy Harnack of Revere, Arthur Doubler, Kenneth Randolph, and Leonard Larson. Cecil Lee Foster age 83 passed away at his home on August 22, 1999 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born at Laurens, Iowa, the son of Vally LeRoy, and Jessie Dagmar (Johnson) Foster. The family moved to a farm near Revere, MN in 1920. He received his formal education in rural school near Revere. He was united in marriage on October 1, 1938 to Clara Nora Shellum at English Lutheran Church Parsonage in Walnut Grove. The couple made their home in the Revere area. In 1947 they moved to a farm north of Walnut Grove and in 1949 they moved to a farm 7 miles north of Walnut. Clara passed away on January 16, 1992. Cecil enjoyed playing cards, mechanic work and welding. He was a member of the English Lutheran Church. He is survived by one son, Richard of Walnut Grove, two daughters Leora Flesner of Lamberton and Mrs. Harvey (Marie) Dallenbach, Walnut Grove. One daughter-in-law Annette Foster, Walnut Grove. Ten grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. One brother Darlow and wife Amelia Foster of Walnut Grove. One sister, Lorraine Giersdorf, Walnut Grove. Sister-in-law, Veona Foster of Tracy. He was preceeded in death by his parents, his wife Clara, one son Allan, one daughter Bonnie Joyce in infancy, one brother Vernon, and one sister Geneva Benedict, one granddaughter, and one great granddaughter.

Clara Nora, one of seven children born to Johnny O. and Mary Mickelson Shellum was born December 31, 1917 on the family farm in Shetek Twp, Murray County, MN. She attended rural school in District #36 and graduated from Tracy High School in 1936. Clara was baptized and confirmed in Willow Lake Lutheran Church south of Tracy. She was united in marriage October 1, 1938 at English Lutheran Church parsonage in Walnut Grove to Cecil Foster and the couple made their home near Revere. In 1949 they moved to a farm north of Walnut Grove where they have lived since. She was a member of English Lutheran Church and its ladies aid. Clara passed away Thursday, January 16, 1992 at Immanuel St. Joseph Hospital in Mankato, MN, after a lingering illness. Clara is survived by her husband of 52 years, Cecil, of Walnut Grove, one son Richard, of Walnut Grove, two daughters, Mrs. Leora Flesner of Lamberton, MN, and Mrs. Harvey (Marie) Dallenbach of Walnut Grove, one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Annette Foster, of Walnut Grove, 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, one sister, Myrtle Kolar, of Tracy, MN, one aunt, Agnes Mickelson, of Worthington, MN. There was a short program with Richard Foster, their son as master of ceremonies. Shirley Peterson, niece of the couple, sang two selections accompanied by Janice Carter.There were about 160 guests present and it was hosted by their children and grandchildren. Cecil and Clara were married on October 1, 1938 at the English Lutheran Church parsonage by Rev. O.J. Govig. Mrs. Charles Kolar and Vernon Foster were their attendants.

Lorraine Berneice (Foster) Giersdorf, age 71, was called home on June 5, 2000 after an incredible struggle against carcinoid syndrome, a very rare form of cancer. Lorraine was born on March 11, 1929 near Revere, MN, the daughter of Jessie (Johnson) and Vally Foster. She completed High School in Walnut Grove. She was united in marriage to Ode Giersdorf on November 14, 1950. She lived her entire life in Walnut Grove. She enjoyed dancing, cooking, playing cards and games, visiting family and friends and was a vibrant participant in her church and community. She will be forever remembered by her daughters, Lucinda Keen (William) of Mendota Heights; LuAnn Vanella (Michael McMonigal) of West St. Paul; grandchildren, Christopher, Catherine, and Victoria Keen; Jessica and Michael Vanella; brother Darlow Foster of Walnut Grove; numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. She was preceeded in death by loving husband, Ode; Vally and Jessie Foster; two brothers, Vernon and Cecil Foster, and one sister Geneva Benedict. Blessed be her memory.

Ode Giersdorf passed away on Friday, May 20, 1988 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis after suffering a massive heart attack. He was 71 years, 5 months, and 7 days old. Odom Virgil Giersdorf was born Dec. 13, 1916, to Walter and Dulcie Giersdorf of Belgrade, Neb. He grew up in Belgrade and later moved to Winner, SD and then to Lamberton, MN. On Nov. 14, 1950 he married Lorraine Foster and they made their home in Walnut Grove. To this union was born two daughters, Lucinda and LuAnn. Ode was an avid fisherman, a Viking and Twins fan, and enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and bowling. He recently retired from the Redwood County Highway Dept. after serving 38 years. Surviving Ode is his wife, Lorraine, daughters, Mrs. William (Lucinda) Keen of Shoreview, MN and Mrs. Vincent (LuAnn) Vanella of West St. Paul and grandchildren Christopher, Catherine and Victoria Keen and Jessica and Michael Vanella. Also surviving are brothers and sisters, Audrey Wilson of Orient, Iowa, Leonard of Mankato, MN, Lyle of Wadena, MN, Floyd of Lamberton, MN, Don of Mounds View, MN, Mrs. Harold (Velma) Dorsten of St Peter, MN, Mrs. Eldon (Elna) Dammann of Sanborn, MN, Jane Schoer of Minneapolis and numerous nieces and nephews. At 2:30 pm on Tuesday, November 14, Miss Lorraine Foster, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vally Foster of Walnut Grove, and Mr. Oden Giersdorf, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Giersdorf of Lamberton, were married at the Methodist parsonage by the Rev. Gerald R. Morgan, using the double ring ceremony. The attendants were Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Foster, brother and sister-in-law of the bride. The bride wore an iridescent copper colored taffeta dress with black accessories, a corsage of yellow roses, and a two stranded pearl necklace, a gift from the groom. Her attendant wore an emerald green crepe dress with black accessories, a corsage of yellow roses, and a two strand pearl necklace, a gift from the bride. The groom and his attendant wore dark brown suits and carnation boutonnieres. A free wedding dance was given at the Walnut Ballroom the same evening. The couple will be at their new home which they have built in the eastern part of Walnut. The bride is employed at the City Food Market and the groom is in the employ of the Redwood County highway department. .

George Bernal Williams passed away at his home in Walnut Grove Friday afternoon December 10, 1971 at the age of 76 years. He was born on September 18, 1895 to Michael and Ada Williams at Eldora, IA. He married Emma Zamzow November 1, 1922 at New Ulm, MN. After their marriage they lived in Lucan for several years and then moved to Revere. They had resided in Walnut Grove the past month. He worked on road maintenance for Redwood County for 26 years. Surviving are his wife, Emma: children: Mrs. Darlow (Amelia) Foster, Walnut Grove; Mrs. Charles (Berniece) Parker, Glenwood; Mrs. Warren (Gloria) Pack, Walnut Grove; ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive along with two brothers and one sister, Mrs. Alice Erickson, Moose Lake, MN; Ralph Williams and Guy Williams, Sturgeon Lake, MN. One son, one grandchild, two brothers, and one sister preceeded him in death.

George chewed a plug of tobacco a day at age 13. George always wanted to move up north. While working on the road he hauled gravel in a wagon box. It started to tip over. George jumped for the wagon to catch the mule, the wagon wheel ran over his leg and broke it.

Walnut Grove Tribune, March 16, 1961: The Fire Department was called early Friday morning to put out a chimney fire at the George Williams home in rural Walnut Grove. There was no damage.

After their marriage they lived in Lucan for several years and later moved to Revere. They resided at Walnut Grove since November 15. Mr. Williams passed away December 10, 1971, two months and six days before Mrs. Williams. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Darlow (Amelia) Foster, Walnut Grove; Mrs. Charles (Berniece) Parker; and Mrs. Warren (Gloria) Pack, Walnut Grove; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
