Obituary Iowa Falls Sentinel Newspaper, Wednesday, January 1, 1863:
Death of an Old Settler
Mr. Jacob Kidwiler, of Jackson township, died on last Sunday afternoon, of lung fever, after a few days illness. Mr. Kidwiler was one of the very first if not THE first settler in Hardin county--having located on his present farm on the Iowa River some thirteen years ago--several years before the organization of the county. His nearest neighbors, for the first year or two after he settled here, were at Marietta, in Marshall county. Mr. Kidwiler was one of your whole-souled, real genuine backwoodsmen, kind-hearted and generous. His loss will be keenly felt by a large family, and the neighborhood in which he lived. He was aged about 60 years.

History of Hardin County" Pioneer Days in Iowa Falls, p. 100 Disease, Fires, Famines, Storms and Accidents. "In January 1863 a virulent disease, which the doctors were unable to diagnose, broke out in Jackson township. The Hardin Sentinel, only newspaper in this part of Iowa, said, "A very fateful disease has made its appearance in Jackson township. The person is taken with chills followed by fever, very similar in character to lung fever, but has so far proven among the adult population almost as fatal as cholera. Esquire Jesse Griffith, Jacob Kidwiler and his wife, and one or two others have died of this disease within the past three or four weeks and others are suffering with it, of whose recovery there is little hope. The patients all die after the crisis seems over and when they appear to be getting well." Jacob Kidwiler, who thus died in 1863, wife and ten children, and Adam Crim and Francis Mitchell, uncles of the Kidwilers, came to Hardin county in the fall of 1850 and located near the present site of Eagle City. They were the first settlers in the north half of Hardin county. "
