Soon after his marriage he and his wife united with the Christian Church but in 1856 both were united with the Methodist Church in St. Louis. After the death of his wife he united with the Baptist Church. During his entire lifetime he was a consistent Christian. His funeral was preached at Garden City, Missouri the 18th. Bro. Deane officiating. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord."

James Grimes Berry
James Grimes Berry (1811-1891) and Lucinda Craven were the parents of Uriah Bryan Berry who married Elizabeth Anderson; John C. Berry who married Rebecca J. Gibbs, and Christa Columbus Berry who married Nancy Jane Carrico. All four of these families moved to Cass County from Greene County, IL, shortly after the Civil War, 1861-1865. The three brothers bought land at the north edge of what is now Garden City - price about $8 per acre. James, a saddler, was employed by the Union Army in St. Louis during the War. Sons, John C. and "Christie" enlisted in the 122 Illinois Infantry Volunteers and were mustered out on July 15, 1865 - a month after Lincoln was assassinated. James died on 17 Dec. 1891. (then the above obituary) William T. died as a youth and John C. Berry died at age 38. James died at the home of his son, Uriah, at Lone Tree and was buried the next day in Clearfork Cemetery beside his wife, Lucinda, and near his son, John, who had died in 1879. John's wife, Rebecca, was buried there in 1936. James was known to be deeply religious, "almost a Quaker" and a member of the "underground railroad" that helped slaves escape to the North. This may explain why he bought from his father-in-law, James H. Craven, the last slaves known to have been sold in Greene County (Court Records, 7 Dec. 1835). James and Lucinda had 23 grandchildren and most of these had large families. Three of Uriah's children married Holloways and some of his descendants still live in Cass County.
