Anna had moved. Jacob is a small boy of four years when his father died. His mother, as a widow with small children, remarried very soon thereafter but she too passed on only four years later. History of Ritchie County WV: Chapter XIV The Deemses

"Phillip Deem (son of Adam Sr) was born in Bedford County PA on January 10, 1785 and in 1809 he was married to Miss Rachel Kidwiler, who was born on April 1, 1790. In 1810 they came to this county and settled ten miles below Cairo, on the river- on the farm that is now owned by Cornelius Bradley, and Alexander Douglas. Here Mrs. Deem passed away, on August 5, 1856, and on January 4, 1865, her husband joined her on the other side. They both rest on the Dotson farm at Rusk. Phillip Deem was a soldier in the War of 1812, and was in the fierce engagement at Lundy's lane (on July 25, 1814). He was the father of a large family. His son, Perry, died in his early manhood; James married an Irish lady and settled at the old home, where he died in 1868; Adam, who was a minister of much ability, went to Indiana, where he fell asleep. The rest of the family were daughters; viz. Elizabeth, Rachel, Cathrine, Hannah, Roena, Mary and Cinderilla. Elizabeth married Peter Coyle and her only daughter is Mrs. John Booth, of Barbour county. Hannah married James Marshall and lived in Wood County. Her children were Jacob, Frank, and Alice Marshall. Cathrine was the late Mrs. James Stuart, of Goose Creek. Roena was the late Mrs. Fredrick Lemon, of Macfarlan, and Mary was the late Mrs. Benjamin Philips, of Rusk. Rachel married Daniel Donley and died at her home on Elm run, in 1907. She was the last survivor of the family of Jacob Deem, and her children are - the late James, Donley, Philip, Thomas, Joseph, Rachel, Bridget, and the late Mary. Cinderilla married John Bradley, and remained in this county, where she reared a large family, viz. Philip met a tragic death at a picnic at the Ritchie mines in 1882; John and Rachel died young; Cornelius lives near Rusk; Mary A. is Mrs. Meyers, of Cairo; Kathrine, Mrs. L.D. Cain; Ellen, Mrs. N.B. Delaney; and Hannah is Mrs. B.T. Jackson.

Notes for Charles Crim:
Transcript of Letter written by Miss Mercy Crim:
Charles Crim, 1743-1807, according to court records, had at the time of his death a vast holding of farming acres. It was located in the northern part of Loudoun Court, Virginia, about three miles south of Lovettsville and five miles from Brunswick, Maryland, on the Potomac River and three miles west of Short Hill Mountain. The first home, no doubt a log cabin, was gone long before my day. Jacob, my great-grandfather, lived in a log house of six rooms and a basement, which at the time must have been considered very large. My grandfather, John H. Crim, had an eight room stone house which as the extreme of elegance, as there were very few eight room stone houses built of stone then. Both are still standing. My father built a farm house of seven rooms about 1878 on his share of his father's estate. We lived there until after my mother's death in 1919 when I sold it. William Henry Crim was a successful physician and antiquarian in Baltimore, Maryland. While we lived on a farm, my father, John J. Crim, was not a farmer. He was interested in public affairs. He was said to be the only Republican ever elected to a county office in Loudoun. For a number of years before his death he was in the insurance business. My brother John J.H. Crim, was a federal Attorney; practicing in New York City and Washington D.C. He was the youngest lawyer to argue a case before a Supreme Court. He was Assistant District Attorney in New York City; Assistant Attorney General of the United States, also special assistant Attorney general. When not employed by the Government he had a lucrative private practice in New York City. His health failed in 1930 and he died at his country estate in New Jersey in 1933. With these few exceptions, most of the Loudoun-born Crims were, as far as I know, farmers. With few exceptions they have attended the New Jerusalem Lutheran Church, where a congregation of German settlers worshipped as early as 1737. The first building used for worship and a school, a log structure, was built under the overseeing of Rev. Schwerdfeger. Soon this became too small and was replaced with a stone building which was destroyed by a snow storm in 1839. It was soon rebuilt, but was burned in 1868. Not discouraged, the present brick edifice, with a seating capacity of 500 was erected. The ground was donated by Lord Fairfax about 1750. The location is especially beautiful with a view of the valley and the Catoctin Mountains on the east, the Short Hill Mountain on the west and the town of Lovettsville a mile to the north. Charles Crim and many of his descendants are buried in the old graveyard or in the more recent Union cemetery which adjoins the church.... five generations of Crims are buried here. In the records of burials I found "Carl Crim-1807", nothing more found. Jacob Crim, son of Charles, served in the War of 1812. A deed recorded in Loudoun County, Virginia, conveyed to "Charles Crim of said county and state of Virginia," dated 8th of February, 1786, a tract of land. One daughter, who married a Kidwiler, went to West Virginia. The Harriers/Heizers moved to Ohio. The others have faded out. I suppose they, too, left Loudoun. Charles Jr. went to Ohio; John, Jacob, and possibly Adam, remained in Loudoun. They still have a few descendants here.

Handwritten notations from a Kidwiler diary. Journal was in the possession of Julian C. Kidwiler in 1982. After he died it was forwarded to Mr. Lee Carey and a xerox copy to Joan Kidwiler. Three of the small passages were. One: Miss Crim's father helped to capture Cornwallis at Yorktown under Washington. He came over a cabin boy, poor, and worked up to own about 1500 acres of land at death. Two: Miss Crim, grandfather Kidwiler's mother, was four years old the day Cornwallis was captured. Reared in Loudoun County, East Virginia, across Short Hill. Three: Before great, great grandfather's (Crim) death he had dinner with and he invited the old sea captain that brought him over as a cabin boy. Before he left he caught grandfather around the neck and cried, saying, "I brought you over as a cabin boy, poor. Now you are rich and I am poor."
