Notes for William Lake:
A copy of a letter dated May 2, 1890 to Thomas W.S. Lake from Thomas Marion Lake, a grandson of John Lake states that John Lake with two brother, Wm and Vincent in or about the year 1754 with their wives and other members of the family if any migrated from St Mary's County, MD to Virginia.
The name is often spelled Leek or Leake in court records.
1758-61: Wm and Mary Quarterly (2nd Series) v. 4 p. 117: from the Ledger of Daniel Payne, merchant of Dumfries, Prince Wm Co. VA 1758-1761: "Ann Lake, Wm Lake's daughter. Many people in what is now Faquier Co VA were customers of Mr. Payne, according to the abstracts in this article. Dumfries was a major port at that time. Ann Lake could be a sister to John, Vincent, and Wm Lake.
1758-59: Virginia Genealogist 1987. 1758/9 Ledger of John Glasscock. Purchasers at the Dumfries Store. Lake, John, son of Wm Lake p. 173. The Wm Lake mentioned here could be the father of Wm, John, and Vincent.
1765: Magazine of VA Genealogy Vol 30 #2 p. 101 and #3 p. 173. Lists of Prince Wm Co VA 1765. There are two tithable lists for Dettingen Parish. The first lists Wm Leake, 2 tithes. The second more detailed list lists Wm. Leke, Wm Leke, Junr. 2 tithes.

Notes for John Cravens: From History of Washington Co PA, Somerset Twp. pp.931-951: "One tract called "Agriculture" contained three hundred and eighty-six acres, and was situated on both sides of the north fork of Pigeon Creek adjoining lands of Vincent Colvin, John Wallace, and James Craven. The date of this land is not given but the survey was made April 6, 1786." (Land of William Colvin) John settled in 1774 a tract of land on the south fork of Pigeon Creek in what became Washington County, PA. It became Somerset Twp in 1781. This territory was claimed by both Virginia and Pennsylvania. He never obtained a grant or title before he died. His son James later obtained this, who lived there until his death in1840. |

This family may have left Morristown, NJ shortly after the death of the father and moved to western Pennsylvania before 1780 along with other members of the Hathaway family. Indications are that the family headed up by the widow Catura, moved to McGee's Station in then Bourbon County KY about 1788. Possibly the oldest son David may have been in Kentucky earlier. Most of the children married in Montgomery County, KY.
