I.  Antonios Sideridis

A.  Ioannis Sideridis married Marou Hondrogiorgaki, daughter of Georgios Hondrogiorgakis.

1.  Eleni Koulouroudi.  Her married name was Sideratou.[1]  She married Pantelis Sideratos, son of Antonios Sideratos.[2]  She was present when a dowry contract between her daughter Marouka and Konstantinos Serbos was signed in 1905. Together with her husband, they offered Marouka an icon depicting the Virgin Mary of the groom's choice, some land they had purchased in the area of Dafnonas known as Voula, 2 blankets, 2 large pillows, 6 sheets, 12 personal outfits, a console table, a wall mirror and a dozen wall towels.  Eleni also offered Marouka a plot of land in Voula she had received as dowry.[3]  Pantelis died between 24 Sep 1905 and 23 Mar 1913, leaving her a widow.[4],[5]  She was listed as a beneficiary in the 1906 will of her brother Georgios. She would receive 50 grosia (currency) after her brother's death, to be distributed by their niece Theodora, daughter of their late brother Nikolaos.[6]  Eleni granted a piece of land on 23 Mar 1913 to her son Ioannis. The property was located at Agios Polikarpos (or Kanalia) and was the remainder of the inheritance due to him from his late father.[7]  She resided in Voula, bordering the Pafilida neighborhood of Dafnonas.  She was an illiterate homemaker.[8]

She created a will on 20 Nov 1916 at her home with the help of notary Haralambos Vassiliades. Witnesses were Stavros Petrakis, Ioannis Gomaras, Stephanos Demetriou Psarou and Ioannis Nikolaou Vassilakis, all farmers and residents of  the Pafilida neighborhood of Dafnonas. They promised to keep the provisions of the will a secret until it was probated.[9]  Eleni died between 21 Nov 1916 and 4 May 1927.

Her will was probated in May 1927 at the Chios Court of First Instance.[10]  In summary, it read as follows: All my fortune is composed of various agricultural fields which I have in various locations on the periphery of the village of Dafnonas in the municipality of Chios, as well as some furniture and domestic utensils of little value. To my fortune, I designate as heirs my male children, Demetrios, Konstantinos, Antonios, Eugenios and Ioannis P. Sideratos and my daughters Theodora, spouse of Emmanouil Stoupaki, Marouka, spouse of Kosti Serbos, all the children of Pantoleontos Sideratos. To my sons Konstantinos, Antonios and Ioannis and to my daughters Theodora, wife of Emannouil Stoupaki, and Marouka, wife of Konstantinos Serbos, I leave each 10 drachmas, to the five of them a total of 50 drachmas. My wealth is so little that the expenses of maintaining me and the inheritance I leave are greater than my wealth. These expenses are a large burden to my two children Demetrios and Eugenios.  I want to say that my two sons, Demetrios and Eugenios, have spent more for my upkeep and my old age than I am leaving them, although my other children otherwise cared for me. If my son Konstantinos wants my field in Kourela he is able to have it, but without the ten drachmas above which I left him, and with the obligation that he must arrange a memorial service for me. If he doesn’t want to arrange this memorial service, to my son Demetrios I leave as inheritance my portions of property from my deceased husband Pantoleontos Sideratos, including my share from the village of Dafnonas in the area of Gkremou, the ruins. I obligate him to arrange two memorial services in Karyes (village). To my son Eugenios I leave my furniture and domestic utensils as well as my fields in the area of Langadakia, from my own possession. I obligate him to disburse to the above beneficiaries the fifty or the forty drachmas and I obligate him to pay for all the expenses of my funeral according to Christian rules and the traditions of our village.[11]

(3)  Ioannis Sideratos was born in 1904 in Dafnonas.[150]  He married Despina Kalamara, daughter of Nikolaos Kalamaras and Ourania Haviara.[151]  He was listed as a beneficiary in the 1932 will of his father. In Agious Saranta, he would inherit the southern half of the vineyard and four northerly rows of land.  He was promised three rows of land in Kourelika and a cow and his father asked him to perform a one year memorial service.[152]  He lived in Dafnonas until shortly after his marriage and the birth of his daughter, Demetria.  Around 1933, Ioannis bought from his uncle, Lambros Evgenios Sideratos, the house and the land surrounding it in the area known as "Voula" or "Agious Sarantes".  He raised his family there.  In Jun 1938, Ioannis was charged with illegal possession of a firearm and sentenced to 2 months in prison.[153]  A law had been passed on the island disallowing guns in private hands. Friends came to spy on each other and their neighbors, turning in gun owners to the powers that be for monetary reward.  John was betrayed in just this way but as he was loved and well known by many, he managed to avoid jail time.[154]  Ioannis died on 17 Aug 1992 of cardiac arrest at his home in Dafnonas, leaving Despina a widow.[155]

f)  Lambros Sideratos was also known as Eugenios when he became a monk.  He was born circa 1871.[156]  In 1913, Eugenios was unfairly attacked by N. Koukourakis of Dafnonas, who was eventually court martialled and found guilty, resulting in a month prison sentence.[157]  He was listed as a beneficiary in the 1916 will of his mother. He and his brother Dimitri had incurred many expenses for her care, in an amount larger than what she was leaving them, whereas the other children simply tended to her.  Eugenios would receive all her furniture and domestic utensils as well as her fields in Langadakia.  He agreed to disburse the appropriate monetary inheritance to his siblings and pay all her funeral expenses.[158]  Lambros died on 31 Dec 1944 of pneumonia in Dafnonas.[159]

g)  Ioannis Sideratos was born on 10 Jan 1881 in Dafnonas.[160],[161]  Before 29 Mar 1909, he married Marianthi Xeniadi.[162]

He travelled to the United States on board the SS Laura from Patras, Greece, arriving at the port of New York in Apr 1909. He was going to his friend Konstantinos Gianniodis at 949 Schoonmaker Avenue in Monessen, Pennsylvania.[163]  He departed from the United States.  On 23 Mar 1913, as the son of Eleni, Ioannis Sideratos was the recipient of a piece of land. The property in the area of Agios Polikarpos or Kanalia was the remainder of the inheritance due to him from his late father. Ioannis was allowed to pass it on or use it as he chose.[164]  In 1916, he was an illiterate workman who stood 5 feet 9 inches, had a dark complexion, brown hair and brown eyes.[165]

He returned to the United States on board the SS Vasilefs Constantinos from Piraeus, Greece, arriving at the port of New York in Aug 1916. His traveling companion was his brother-in-law Emmanuel Stoupakis. He was going to his friend Konstantinos Kalliangas at 149 Amsterdam Avenue in New York City.[166]  He was listed as a beneficiary in the 1916 will of his mother. He would inherit 10 drachmas, to be distributed by his brother Eugenios.  Although many of the expenses of his Eleni's care were incurred by his brothers Dimitris and Eugenios, she admitted Ioannis and the others tended to her.[167]  In 1918, Ioannis resided at 1514 East 3rd Street in South Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with his brother-in-law Emmanuel Stupakis.  At the time, he was employed as a fireman in the boiler house of Bethlehem Steel.[168],[169]  Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. At the third registration, Ioannis filled out a draft card on 12 Sep 1918 (at age 37).[170]  Ioannis was listed on the 1920 Census recorded 9 Jan 1920 at 1111 Schoonmaker Avenue in Monessen. He was a roomer in the household of John Flamos and was employed as a steel mill laborer.  John Xenakis, Jim Karnedis & Gust Preonis were also lodgers in this household.[171]
