Decendent of Claude Mathias Farnsworth. Anyone named Phaneuf should be familiar with the indian attack on the town of Groton Ma. in 1704. Not because it was a great victory for either side, but it was the first step to establishing a new family name in North America During that attack, a 1~year old boy named Mathias farnsworth (or Farnworth) was captured by the Indians and taken Canada. During Queen Anne’s War, many settlements in New Hampshire and Massachusetts were attacked by Indians. One of several attacks on the town of Groton is described in an 1894 town history: The Indians attacked Lancaster on July 31st. and probably Groton with-in a day or two...It was during this assault. that Matthias Farnsworth Jr was captured and taken to Canada, were he remained permanently. He was afterwards married to a French wife. and his numerous posterity are still living in Canada. The name is found written now Farnet, Farnef and Phaneuf. Everyone named Phaneuf, farnet or fanef (or numerous other variations) can trace their lineage to the 14 year old captive. |
